Chapter 2: Familiar face with a strange name

-------------------------------------------------------------

(Q)

'What good are you if all you do is blame yourself for what happened? You couldn't of stopped them from doing this to me.' Hands a blur as I hand-signed my words.

'Yes, I could of. I could of stopped him. I was right there just one too many steps away.' Green Eyes shouts eyes darting from my hands to my face watching for my next words.

'What do you mean you were there? You flew down from the colonies as soon as you heard. Didn't you?'My eyes blurry with unshed tears as I hand-signed. 'Didn't you....?'

Late morning sunlight filtered through the loose flap rousing me from sleep plagued by voices of the past. Golden beams striped my rusty colored robes and my blue blanket. Humm, that is why I feel so hot. I never took my robes off before turning in. I wonder why.

I started to yawn but nearly choked from the pain in my throat. I was about to sit up when I felt someone do so next to me and touch my shoulder. I quickly jerked away and put my back to the tent so I could face whoever it was.

As soon as I saw his crest fallen face I remembered. The sad way he was looking at me made me realize I'd done something wrong.

What a way to start the mor-

"Mamoru, you sleepy head," I heard a boyish voice called out, "Snoozing away the day is not going to happen. I got news about the festival you want to go to."

Suddenly the red headed boy knelt in front of the tent flap and peered in with a goofy grin of white teeth. The boy blinked hard when he saw that I had company and he sat back on his rear.

"Oh, hello, you must be an old friend of Mamoru. Well, I'm Raiu and I have breakfast waiting out there," Raiu told him. "But since I didn't know you were here I'll go make a third helping."

I waved at him and Raiu went off whistling brightly.

I got up to leave the tent but I saw the look on his face as he sat there holding his bandaged side. His wounds must be bothering him again.

I went over to him and removed a few of the layers to see how well he was healing. Most of the slashes had closed in the last two nights and the bruises had the color of healing ones. The arm was still set despite all the moving around he had done. Problem was he had a slight fever. Hopefully, Raiu got the supplies I asked for.

After bandaging him up again I dug around in my pockets for the bottle of pain-killers and showed him it. He nodded and I gave him two which he swallowed dry.

I helped him out of the tent and we both stood a few moments adjusting to the sunlight. I shifted his weight against me better before moving downwind toward the fire.

Raiu was merrily whistling some lilting tune as he dumped spoonfuls of rice and meat into three bowls. He tossed a withered apple to the camel so it'd stay out of the bowls as he dug for what I assumed must be a new wine skin. That's the only thing other than village girls that makes his eyes twinkle like that.

I sighed sharply and he looked up trying to pull an innocent face but I knew him too well to be fooled. Honestly you would think this boy knew better than to hide something from me by now especially wine. I waved him over but when he started walking toward me empty handed I frowned.

His face fell a little as he pulled it out and handed it over muttering, "I know. I know wine only in the evening." Then he slumped over to his spot and began to eat disheartedly.

I unscrewed the cap and handed it over to him while Raiu continued hiding his face in his food.

"That is so unfair that you let him have some and not me," Raiu whined giving me those puppy-dog eyes that an old friend used to do all the time.

I sighed as he handed it to Raiu smiling as he was given a bowl of food in return. Raiu pointed him to a rug upwind from the fire. He sat down cross-legged carefully and placed his bowl in his lap.

Taking my dish I sat and ate slowly grimacing as I swallowed with my sore throat. Humm, Raiu got some new spices. Fish will go better.

"So where and when'd you meet Mamoru?" Raiu asked around a mouthful of food before he shoved another spoonful in.

He stared at his food before shrugging his right shoulder slightly saying, "I can't remember right now where or when I first meet- Mamoru? That's your name?" He looked pointedly at me.

I nodded and continued chewing my food.

"Okay. Well, how did you end up out here?" Raiu, full of curiosity as usual, didn't look like he was going to stop questioning his new victim anytime soon.

He frowned and replied in a distant voice, "I fell out of space."

Raiu almost dropped his bowl but checked himself. Trust Raiu never to waste food if it has the slightest chance of entering his mouth and hence feeding his hyper energy. He is so much like him it is disturbing.

"You came from up there?" disbelief evident in his bulging eyes as he pointed to the sky.

He nodded and finished scooping out his bowl.

"Wow, what's your name I gotta know?" he brightly began asking, "Not many end up here from up there and does the earth look as beautiful from up there as they say ? I want to know if its true that the Gunda-"

I did a viscous hand-sign for him to stop and gave him a dark look.

Raiu like to choke on his words and mouthful of food at my angry response. I normally never scold him seriously so his shock is understandable but I don't need Raiu upsetting him any further.

"Fine, then at least give me something to call you by?" Raiu asked glumly.

He shrugged at Raiu and staring intently at a spoonful of rice muttered, "Can't remember that."

Raiu looked at me hopefully. I sighed and hand signed 'W-U-F-E-I' to him.

"Wuf Ei," Raiu turned to him and smiled his Any-nicknames-or-do-I-get-the-honor-of-making-them-up grin.

Damn, that kid has got a mouth just like he did and it seems Wufei agrees with me about that as I try to sign the correct pronunciation. W-U F-E-I.

"Oh, Wu-fei," he said looking at me.

I nodded and signed to Raiu to translate for me to Wufei, "You need to rest again. I'll put robes out for you. Call for Raiu if you need anything. He will also have lunch ready later."

Helping Wufei to stand we headed back to the tent with his better arm over my shoulder. With my partially free hand I grabbed my clothes bag and the medicine bag that Raiu had brought back with him.

In the tent I gave him some antibiotics after showing him the bottle and him agreeing to take it. Then I pulled out my green robes for him to wear. I was saving them for the festival but I figured the linen would be less coarse on his abused flesh.

Wufei eyed them strangely before carefully touching them. He raised an eyebrow at me then lifted the undershirt and slid it carefully over his head but had to stop putting it on when he got to his broken wrist.

I scooted forward and helped him pull it on. Obviously the medicine was taking affect if he couldn't do that alone. I could see him fighting it but I know those pain-killers mixed with the antibiotics were going to put him out faster then he knew.

Wufei slumped forward with a sigh and I laid him on the blanket carefully.

Getting up I heard him mutter, "Could of sworn that was Winner."

I just stood there and stared at him. He must remember something now.

(W) There was someone screaming. Loud and long wailing that was punctuated by the sound of explosions. The words in the wailing were unintelligible yet the pain was so evident and sharp that even my chest was torn by it and I realized... the one wailing was me..

I was slashing and slashing at something...not very hard... my grief had weakened me too much..but my rage kept me moving...

... dizzy.. stared down........... my ....my hands were dark as my slick, short knife ... it fell away... into a pool.. of blackness...that soaked into my white pants... I'm on my knees..on someone..

..... had felt the warmth of him....but it was wrong, there was no movement. .no.... breath..

... a loud thudding filled my ears....my dark hands were shaking...want to wipe the darkness off...and to scream again at the trembling horror that my hands are but no sound comes out.........nothing...

...what is going on?...

.....what have I done?...

...an iron smell leaked into my nose accompanied by the smell of gunpowder and smoke...

....my gut twists terribly as I lift my eyes to his face...his wide eyes staring...not cloudy....he blinks... he is not dead ... feel him twitch....

.....something heavy slammed against me... but it didn't really register... was still staring at his eyes.....as I fell over and was pinned by it...

...those pained eyes was all I saw till a sudden blankness took over...

Author note: I didn't realize Mamoru was Darien's name in the Japanese version till my brother pointed it out. I used it because of its meaning. Little things hide themselves hinting at the meaning.

If people start complaining about my R rating and nothing to show. I think it's in the next chapter or so. Quatre's neck does have to be explained and other things.
