Nny lifted his head from the table once more. His eyes were assaulted with light. Morning was upon him. Once again he had succumbed to the human need for sleep. It sickened him so. (Sleep sucks. It's almost 1 AM and I'm still fine. Who needs sleep? I'm stayin up all night again. WOO!)
He stretched and yawned, standing up. And once more he remembered the terrible fact that Devi was dead and was instantly desolate. He was just standing there wondering if he was going to cry when there was a knock on the front door.
"Oh shit please let it be the grim reaper," Nny muttered. He walked the walk to the front door and opened it. He hadn't bothered to lock all of Devi's locks. He never did.
Tenna stood in the doorway. The difference in her appearance since Devi's death wasn't exactly unnoticeable. Her smooth chocolate colored skin was a slightly sickly shade. The dark bags under her eyes were even more pronounced then Nny's. Her hair was matted, as she hadn't bothered with combing for a few days. She'd lost some weight since the incident and looked generally exhausted. The obvious fatigue in her eyes and in her voice when she croaked out a weak 'hi' was distressing. All the bounce in her attitude had fizzled out. The empty hand that usually clutched Spooky was twitching frequently. Her other hand was shaking also. It looked like she wasn't in the proper state to even deal with work today.
"Wow. You look terrible," Tenna said weakly, looking at Nny.
"You look a little under the weather yourself. Losing sleep again?" Nny asked.
"Yeah. A lot of it. I don't think I've slept in a week. I didn't even know that was physically possible," Tenna mumbled.
'Oh yeah, it is,' Nny thought, remembering those times in the past. "Yeah," he muttered.
"So how're you holding up?" Tenna asked.
"Not so good. No one knows..it's impossible to understand for other people. No one knows...no one can even begin to comprehend how much I loved her. It feels like my entire heart is missing," Nny moaned sadly.
"Sheesh. It feels like a chunk of my heart is missing, but not the whole thing. I don't know how I'm gonna keep living. It's so hard. I feel like a robot, and I'm programmed to feel nothing but sadness no matter what I do. It really sucks ass," Tenna mumbled. Nny nodded. He understood perfectly what that feeling was like.
"I know what you mean," he said quietly, leaning against the doorframe. He stared at the buckles on his boots, counting them repeatedly. The slow realization once again dawned on him that he was going to have to live the rest of his life without Devi. He felt sick. "You can come in if you want. I mean.you could anyway since it's not my house...but you know," Nny said, his mind drifting off once more as he spoke, wondering whether he was going to make it through another day.
"No thanks. I just came by to make sure you were OK. I gotta..I gotta go to work," Tenna said unhappily.
"Are you sure you're up for work?" Nny asked, raising one eyebrow slightly. Tenna was not very good at working under depression.
"I'm fine. I have to keep up with rent payments," Tenna said gloomily, trying to smile but only managing a weak half grin. Nny grinned back, a feeble, extremely forced smile. It was hard to tell that it was actually a smile. "Well, I'd better go," Tenna grumbled.
"Sure," Nny said, blinking his sore and bloodshot eyes several times in order to clear his sight a little bit.
"You take care of yourself, OK?" Tenna asked, slinging her bag back over her shoulder.
"OK," Nny said. Tenna gave him a weak smile, and headed off down the hall.
Nny shut the door of the apartment and stood there, alone once more. Sunlight poured in through the windows, and the apartment was bright and cheery.
But the darkness that was threatening to take over his mind was overwhelming.
