Blood is thicker than Water

Chapter 1 Ebony Riddle woke with a start and shot up in bed. Her breathing was labored and her hair was sticky with sweat. She looked to her right and to her relief saw her husband was still lying next to her. She gently tapped him on the shoulder. "Tom, Tom, I had that dream again." He muttered something into his pillow, which sounded like 'Go back to sleep' but she wasn't overly sure. "What did you say?" Tom turned his head to face his wife. "I said go back to sleep we'll talk about it in the morning." With that he rolled back over again. Ebony lay back against her pillow but she didn't go to sleep again, for fear of her dream again.

For the past three weeks a certain dream had been plaguing her sleep; it didn't happen all the time but when it did she was always so afraid of what it might mean. It involved her and Tom hurrying along a forest path in the dead of the night. She remembered they were following something but she never remembered what it was. They then halted at the edge of a misted clearing were they were hidden but could still see what was going on. Suddenly the mist would clear and Ebony could see her son been tortured by someone she did not reconise. She never saw her daughter at any point, which was rather confusing. The dream always ended with a flash of green light and then the sense of falling at which point she always woke up.

Eventually she fell asleep again and woke up to find the space next her unaccompanied. She didn't worry this wasn't unusual, Tom usually left before she was conscious. She eventually got up and dressed and decided it was time that Sly (Sylvester, her son) got up.

She walked silently into his room and stood over him. She folded her arms and put on her 'do what I want you to now or else' look. A minute later he rolled over and sighed. "Fine I'll get up." He held his hands up in defeat. Her standing over him until he got up method always worked, it even worked with his Dad but not nearly as well as he always managed to get round her. Ebony waited by the door until he was out of bed and getting dressed. "Mum, can you give me some privacy?" he said when she didn't leave. "It's not like you've got anything I haven't seen before, but I'll go anyway. But if you're not down in ten minutes I'll come hunting for you." "Sure." She headed off down the stairs and sat down at the kitchen table. A couple of minutes later Sly came flying down the stairs wearing a black T- shirt and trousers. He had obviously not done anything with his sandy blonde hair; it was still stuck up all over the place. "Come here mister." Ebony grabbed a comb off the table and began attacking him with it. "Mum get off it took me ages to get my hair like this," he protested. "You've only been up ten minutes, now keep still," she argued back, before stepping back to admire him. "Okay your done, now can I go out for a walk?" he asked trying to look sweet and innocent. "Don't give me that look Sylvester Yvenho Elijah Riddle, you haven't had breakfast yet." "I'm not hungry," he argued. "So the chocolate bar you ate on your way down the stairs wasn't food." "I'm sure you've got x-ray vision." "No honey I just know stuff like that, like when you tried to sneak that cockerel in to try and hatch a basilisk, or when you came home with that girl Sophia and tried to steal all my chocolate and when..." "Yeah mum that's enough, now please can I go!" he interrupted. "No, you haven't eaten yet." He opened his mouth to protest, "I said no."
