You Think You Know Me

Chocolate-brown eyes, hidden behind a veil of white

Framing an ashen face

Which shows no emotion as I silently watch.

I know I seem distant

Separate

Worried

In constant denial.

But how would you know?

No one asks, or ever will.

I know what has happened,

You think I don't notice?

With a cheerful grin

I say I'm fine

But I know it isn't true.

My sister, my mother

They are gone

However, what is to gain from tears?

They never will return,

Running

Laughing

Crying

Living.

And I try to live

As best I can;

You don't understand how I could.

You know nothing of my other self,

So hard

So cold

So Cruel

So Uncaring.

But he isn't as heartless as some I know.

He may use me, but how are you different?

He never leaves me

Never hurts me

And protects me, at least.

People call him pitiless

But he has his reasons.

What are yours?

I wait for you day after day

Hoping you'll come home

But worry you won't arrive again.

Is this denial,

Waiting

Wanting

Wishing

For things to be better?
