Sirius sighed deeply and wrapped his arms around James. His breathing was shallow and rapid, his long hair stuck to his forehead with sweat. His cheeks were flushed and there was such love in his eyes. Love for James.
He'd never known James to be so loving - so gentle. Normally, sex with James Potter was a frenzy of touches, moans and kisses. But this time had been different. More affectionate and tender.
Looking deep into James' eyes, he saw a warm depth there, which he hadn't noticed before.
"God, I love you, Jamie," he breathed, pressing a soft kiss to the other boy's lips. James didn't reply, but merely tightened his arms around Sirius' waist. They laid silently for a few minutes, just listening to each other's breathing.enjoying the closeness. Then James suddenly untangled himself from Sirius' arms and headed towards the bathroom. Frowning, Sirius climbed out of bed and quickly pulled on a pair of jeans, following James.
"Jamie?" he said, a note of concern edging his voice. "Are you alright?" He knocked gently on the bathroom door.
"My clothes," came the reply, slightly muffled by the door between them. "Could you please pass me my clothes, Sirius?"
Sirius walked slowly over to the chair by the bed and scooped up James' clothes in his arms. What was going on?
He knocked on the bathroom door again and James opened it just wide enough to reach his arm out. Sirius' face was creased with confusion as James lifted the pile of clothes from him without speaking and closed the door again.
"Are you alright?" Sirius repeated, putting his ear close to the door, but James didn't reply.
After a couple of minutes, the lock snapped and the door opened. Sirius' mouth dropped open and his eyes widened. Remus appeared through the door. His fair hair was falling into his eyes and he was wearing James' clothes, which were slightly too large for him.
Sirius couldn't speak. His brain couldn't process what was happening.
"Hello, Sirius," Remus said quietly, looking down at the floor.
Sirius blinked and managed to stutter, "W-what.what."
"Polyjuice potion."
Sirius couldn't believe what he was seeing. Remus refused to look at him - his eyes remaining focused on the floor.
"But why?" Sirius asked after a few moments.
Remus finally looked at him and sighed. The words he spoke seemed heavy and difficult to say.
"Because I had to know," he whispered. "I had to know what it was like..to be loved by Sirius Black. And..the only way I would ever find out, was if I was James Potter."
Sirius didn't say anything, so Remus continued, nervously.
"I wanted you to love me..but I know you've only ever loved one person, and that person isn't me. So even if it was only for a little while, I had to know what it was like."
And with a sad smile, Remus shook his head and walked quietly out of the bedroom, closing the door softly behind him. And Sirius could do nothing, but watch him leave.
