A/N: This is just a very quick, short story I wrote in about half an hour. So…it's not my usual quality. I had tests to study for, homework to do.
Nita Callahan sighed contentedly in her porch swing, swaying gently in the winter breeze. Her best friend and wizarding partner, Kit Rodriguez, snoozed beside her, his gentle snores combining with the gentle wind. A stray lock of Nita's auburn hair settled onto his face, and he twitched and yawned. Blinking sleepily up at Nita, he smiled.
"Christmas Eve. Can you believe it?"
Nita laughed.
"Our last year of high school. Can you believe it?"
Kit's face fell as he caught her meaning.
"Well, we can still keep in touch," he sighed.
Nita shrugged halfheartedly.
"We could go to the same college…"
"Maybe."
"Yeah."
The rocker swayed gently, then Nita jumped up off the rocker.
"Wanna come in?"
Kit sighed.
"I guess so. It's getting cold out here."
He followed Nita inside.
A warm fire blazed in the family room fireplace, filling the Callahan household with warmth and festivity. As Kit and Nita passed through the living room doorway, Dairine and Kit's mother came flying out from the kitchen. Kit and Nita stopped dead in their tracks as Dairine, wide-eyed, gasped, "Nita…Kit…Dad…he…"
Nita panicked.
"He what?" she shrieked.
Dairine's look of horror changed to one of wicked amusement.
"He hung mistletoe right over where you two are standing. Merry Christmas, you two."
Kit peered upward at the green and white plant, then looked at his mother with incredulity.
"You helped plan this, didn't you, Mom?"
Attempting a look of innocence, Kit's mom protested, "Who, me?"
Dairine rolled her eyes.
"Nita, Kit, stop stalling and just get it over with."
Nita sent Kit a thought.
Gotta pity you. Your mom's watching this whole thing.
Kit rolled his eyes, and she leaned in toward him. He pressed his lips to hers as they had done so many times before, to the loud handclaps of…
Nita broke the kiss in shock.
"DAD?"
Both her father and mother stepped out from the kitchen, grinning, for they had filmed the whole thing.
Nita buried her face in her hands, blushing furiously. Mrs. Callahan patted her daughter's shoulder.
"It's okay, Nita. We'll only replay the tape to embarrass you when you argue with us."
Nita, sufficiently embarrassed, stomped up to her room and, after letting Kit in, shut and locked the door. Kit sat down on her bed.
"Nita…can I talk to you?"
She glanced at him, amused.
"Fire away."
Kit fingered something in his pocket.
"Uh…well, we've been…through a lot, and we…might have to split apart…soon, so…this is the most quick, most direct way I can…fix that."
Nita raised an eyebrow.
"Kit, are you okay?"
He rolled his eyes, and knelt down in front of her on one knee.
"Nita…will you…marry me?"
Kit slipped a ring onto her finger; the ring she'd dreamed about ever since she was a little girl. Her mouth dropped open. She laughed, surprised, then, taking one look into Kit's eyes, broke down completely.
"Kit…I've never been so surprised…oh my god…c'mere, you!"
She grabbed him, tears streaming down her face, and kissed him on the lips once more, more than enough to tell him what her answer would be.
The diamond ring cast rainbows onto Nita's face as she told her parents what had happened. Kit stood off to the side, looking embarrassed over the whole thing. He doubted her could have made Nita any happier. The moment she finished talking with her parents, she dragged Kit into her room and told him, very clearly, "Christopher Rodriguez… you know, you have just made this Christmas one to remember…for as long as I live…both as Nita Callahan and your wife, Kit."
The Callahan household sparked in the night, a jewel among the suburbs of New York on that Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all, a great night. Hope your Christmas is one to enjoy with friends and family.
