Title: Reflections of an Angel
Author: K Gilmore
A/N: Felt a lil angsty. This is the result. Kinda AU. Some parts are real. Most is from my twisted mind.
*Sunnydale, Thanksgiving 1999*
He had kept a close eye as evil crashed through the window of the house. He fought on her side, hiding in the shadows. She couldn't see him. If she saw him, they'd both be in trouble.
Evil gone, he looks towards the window. He sees her beautiful blond hair, casually pushed back. He sees a Thanksgiving dinner on the table. He watches as her "family" sits around the table. Talking, laughing. This is her world. A world he would never be a part of.
He stares for a moment too long. Because at that moment, as if she can sense him, she looks up.
He laughing face twists into shock, then contentment. She leaves the table and rushes outside.
He meets her and they exchange a passionate kiss.
"That wasn't supposed to happen. You weren't supposed to see me," he says.
"But I did. Doesn't that tell you something?" She says, praying that he'll kiss her again.
"I'm sorry. I couldn't have come back. This can never BE anything."
He turns around and leaves her standing there. He hears her trudge back up the stairs, whimpering softly.
It took everything in him not to follow her back.
But he had to walk away.
He had told himself not to come back because there was nothing for him here.
But he knew that wouldn't stop him.
Nothing ever would.
*A year later*
She was loosing the fight. The vampire was slowly killing her, waiting for the moment he would savor her blood.
He kicked her over a headstone. Her head collided with the ground and she lay there for a moment, stunned.
She was fighting for her life.
The vampire came closer, fangs barred, ready to take her life away.
For some reason, she thought of her vampire lover.
It was a year ago today, she thought, a year since I said good-bye to him.
The vampire's teeth sank into her neck.
She gasped in pain, praying that it would soon be over.
But then the vampire was gone.
He was no more than a pile of dust on her lap.
She searched for her savior, knowing it was him.
But he was gone.
*2003*
Sunnydale was no more. Her big apocalyptic battle had left it to be nothing but a large crater in the ground.
He had heard every detail of her battle, from Willow's spell to Spike's heroic death. He had heard she was safe.
But where was she?
He had searched the world for her, following lead after lead, desperately trying to find his beloved.
Each search had ended in a pile of dust.
But that didn't stop from looking.
Nothing ever would.
A year after that*
His search had ended.
Any hope of a reunion was out of his mind.
He had found her.
She had strolled into his office, looking for him. But she wasn't the same.
She was one of them.
A group of vampires had gotten to her. In a moment of weakness she was taken and transformed into the beings he loathed.
He was forced to take action.
Tonight they buried her ashes.
It took everything in him not to feel guilty.
But how could he not?
After all those years, she had been in Los Angeles.
She had died in Los Angeles.
He had killed her in Los Angeles.
He wanted to throw his arms around her and whisper things her ear.
He wanted to kiss her.
He wanted to smell her sweet vanilla scent.
But, most importantly, he wanted to tell her that he loved her.
But he couldn't.
She was gone.
Forever.
