'Twas the day before peacetime
and all through the camp
doctors were operating
'neath O.R. lights and lamps.
The surgeons and corpsmen,
nurses, personnel,
kept all their thoughts private
did not wish to tell.
But men and women
of different ranks
silently, diligently,
gave their numerous thanks.
For so many had died,
and would still die today,
when in 12 hours, the living
would be all shipped away.
Cut into this body,
you can do it, one more,
push out of your mind
what peace has in store.
It's been three long, long years,
of standing in blood,
holding the lives of children
who on battlefields stood.
You win some, you lose some,
try and even the score,
the 'saved' side gets too high,
and you lose some more.
The clock ticks ever-closer
to peace, in it's glory,
when the Korean War will be
just another history story.
Or a deafening scream
in the dead of the night
from the mind of one
who was sent out to fight.
More wars will just follow
it's easy to see,
the world's not at peace
and it's not meant to be.
More men and more women
will be asked to leave,
more innocents will die
and more families will grieve.
Some did not know this,
but some of them did,
as they cut into the bodies
and watched as they bled.
Now it's that time of year,
and I've said my small piece,
Merry Christmas to all,
here's to hoping for peace.
