"Shrek" Adaptation
Scene: Before the wedding Place: London-St Paul's cathedral Time: Present
The streets of London were filled with waving and cheering spectators. Shrek and Donkey had to push pass them to reach the marble stairs leading to the grand oaken doors of St Paul's cathedral. They hurriedly ascended, minding the odd domesticated pidgin or two as they went. The two paused as they reached the top.
The cathedral loomed above them. It looked radiating. Every stone in perfect condition, the stain glass windows translucent. Shrek and Donkey, in their ragged, dirty clothes, seemed like piles of dust compared to it.
Donkey glanced around nervously. They were alone; everyone else was either in the cathedral or on the street below them.
"Go on then," he nudged.
Shrek gulped. He stared at the doors of the cathedral. The heavy mahogany wood with black lion head handles did not present a promising prospect.
"Are you going to stand there all day?" asked an impatient Donkey.
Shrek turned "What do you expect? There are thousands of people in there, and millions more watching on television. They will all be staring.at me. I do not like being stared at, especially not by everyone in Britain."
"Fair point, but do you want to be standing out here when the love of your life is marrying Prince Charles in there?" Donkey asked.
"Can I get back to you on that one?" Shrek suggested meekly.
Donkey glared, " I thought you had more guts in you, Shrek. You've wasted enough of my time already. I'm going back to the dump."
Donkey started slowly towards the steps.
"Wait!" Shrek shouted. "I'll go in.."
"Ha!!" Donkey said triumphantly "I knew you'd fall for it."
". Only if you go in with me." Shrek added
"What?! In there?" Donkey said aghast. "You can't be serious. What about all those people?"
"You wanted me to do it" Shrek pointed out.
"But you have a reason, I don't," Donkey argued.
"You're my friend. Friends do things together," pleaded Shrek.
"Well, if you put it that way" Donkey blushed, "I'll be honoured to escort you."
"Your buttons are so easy to push," Shrek stated
Together, Shrek and Donkey pushed open the doors and awaited the sea of turning heads and flashing cameras.
