Hi everyone, this is my first pirates fic, so be kind. I'm a huge fan; my friend and I saw it eight times before it was even out of theaters - we now know the dialogue by heart, lol. I really don't know where my inspiration for this came from; it's kind of angsty. I may continue it, but it'll probably just remain a standalone. Please read and review; reviews mean everything to me!

Disclaimer: is it too weird that the paperclip dude on Microsoft word just gave me a smug look as I wrote 'disclaimer'? maybe I'm hallucinating.in any case, I clearly don't own Pirates of the Caribbean.=(

His hand reached up to caress her check gently, his eyes meeting her deep blue ones intently.

"I should have told you.

** His face was hidden in the crowd, but if you had been looking, you would have easily found him. He was the sole person there not smiling, not radiating with joy. He was the sole person there whose eyes were empty and lost, whose countenance was one of misery, of a man who had lost everything.

She had told him not to come. He had said he wouldn't. But he came anyway. He couldn't stand by idly, hiding away while the love of his life married someone else. So instead he had come to their wedding, but

To what point and purpose? He heard Jack's voice in his head as clear as day, as clear as if he had been standing beside him instead of off in the Caribbean somewhere. The opportune moment, he whispered, wait for the opportune moment.

Will had waited. And now, as commodore and Mrs. James Norrington exchanged their first kiss as man and wife, he knew he had waited too long.

.Every day.

** Elizabeth looked out over the swarm of people gathered around her, searching in vain for the one man in Port Legann who had not come.

For the one man who she cared about coming.

Yes, she had told him not to attend, but she hadn't known what else to do! And despite his promise not to be there, a tiny particle of her had hoped that he would be.After all they had been through together.to come to this end.

Her gaze fell upon her father, Governor Swann. He was beaming up at her, proud of her at last; she tried to smile at him, praying it looked real and not forced, not as though it were a shield to hid her tears. This was why she was doing this, why she had chosen to marry the Commodore. For her father.

She felt like a criminal, and when the minister spoke "I now pronounce you man and wife. May your love last until death do you part," she could not imagine a worse sentence.

And when she leaned in to kiss her new husband, in her mind, his eyes were a chocolate brown, nad his hair was a gorgeous natural brown.

But when she opened her eyes, her imaginary Will had once more disappeared. **

.From the moment I met you.

** He had come to her house the night before, and found her in her garden, sitting on a bench beneath the cold myriad of stars. HE had somehow known she would be there, and she had somehow known he would find her there.

And he had held her as she cried.

And when he left, they had agreed to go their own separate ways. To forget each other, to move on. After all, who had ever heard of the blacksmith marrying the governor's daughter? This was real life; it wasn't a fairytale. The ending was far from happy.

And when he left, they both felt a part of them die.

But this was what they had to do. **

.I love you."

And a sole tear slipped down her face, as she fell into his embrace.

And they savored the moment.
