It was towards the end of August when they went with their mothers. One brought her daughter, one brought her son. The boy and the girl sat on a wooden bench near the border that blurs Diagon Alley with Knockturn Alley. Their mothers were running errands and had made it clear that neither was to leave Diagon Alley. So, of course, they chose the bench closest to it. Ice cream tastes like heaven on a summer's day. She had chocolate, he had peppermint. They watched all the people walk by.
"I hate children." Pansy said as a witch and her three screaming children walked by. The woman smiled apologetically at the two, but Pansy just rolled her eyes. Draco just sniggered smugly.
"Oh, Parkinson. You'd better not hate ours. I'd like an entire Quidditch team." He flashed her a crocked smirk and she just shook her head.
"You'll be lucky if I let you have one." She squeezed her eyes shut until the children's cries became faint and distant.
"What an old hag." Draco said as an elderly witch hobbled down the street, her hat tattered and torn.
"Draco!" Pansy shrieked. "You'd better not call me a hag when I'm old!" She looked mockingly cross at him.
"Darling Pansy," he said, laughing and pinching her cheek, "You'll always be my little wench." She put her chin up in the air and smiled jokingly, at the same time pulling her cheek out of his reach.
"Oh! That's a lovely ring!" Pansy sighed as two young wizards walked by. The female sported an enormous, jeweled ring that twinkled in the sunlight.
"You'll know nicer." Draco said plainly, looking disgustedly as the two lovers hugged and giggled and smiled right in the middle of the street.
"You'd better make sure." Pansy said complacently.
They waited while their mothers shopped. Their fathers had always let them go down into Knockturn Alley, but they were both gone now. So they waited and waited for their mothers to come back. As they finished their ice cream, Pansy giggled at Draco.
"What's so funny, Parkinson?" He stared at the girl who was pink with laughter.
"You've got," she began, "ice cream. All over your chin, in fact." She laughed and he looked at her cynically. She reached over and wiped it off then proceeded to lick her thumb. "Mmm. Peppermint."
