Drabble 1 - Momento

Author - Feather

Category - Harry Potter

Summary/Key words - Not all departures are immediate; Hermione leaves the Muggle world. Must include the words: coffee, gray, cello, momento.

Author's Notes - After a long hiatus from writing I return with this short drabble and the explanation, yes, this is supposed to be short. I was originally contemplating Hermione and the question of her being Muggle, and then that led to parallels with feminism and coming of age. I was aiming for 200, but when I fell just shy of 250, I expanded my word limit to that. Finally, this is the result of my late night musings - I hope you enjoy.

THE moon keeps her awake, for even in a stone castle does the light overtake. For she is still young yet, and sleep does not come easily.

That she is brilliant is the consensus of her teachers and peers, but even if she has the knowledge of one come of age is she still a fourteen year old girl-child. The moon has begun to pull monthly at her soft belly and she feels ferally attached to the earth. She was Alice, once, lost, but now she is Hermione, a queen, herself.

For it has been some years since she forsook her life of gray London skies and cello lessons; normalcy is a faded and beloved memory. She is ripening as her mother moon with her innate magics and with relief, looking over the pale, rich earth, she knows she will not have to learn how to love coffee and wine. Who needs such trifling pleasures? But she does not know what she wants.

Feeling disembodied from herself, she plucks a hair from her head, and holds it to the moonlight. It's bushy texture and rich brown color fade to a dull silver, uniform with the light of the night and of the earth. Smiling, she sets it aside on her bedside table and slips herself into bed; this his her momento of her life which is now no more than a memory; for she has left the world of Muggle and has entered that of magic.
