Guardian Angels
"Thank you."
I remember it like it was yesterday. As a matter of fact, it was a day not unlike this one. Snow fluttered softly from the cloud-filled sky, resting on and before my shoes, then being crushed underneath them. That day, I was bleeding. I thought I was going to die. I was shivering and putting pressure on my wound, but the blood wouldn't stop flowing.
It was an unlikely day for an afternoon stroll, so when he passed my by--young cheeks pink from the cold, nose rubbed raw, recently fresh scar crossing it's bridge eyes wide and curious--I was stunned. I thought he was beautiful. Then again, I was a few minute's reach from death.
When he noticed me, his eyes shot to my arm, and the blood-stained snow under it. He dashed over, falling to his knees in the powder. I knew he was shouting to me, but I couldn't hear the things he was saying. He pulled me into his arms and tore a piece of cloth from his own clothing.
He started to bandage my arm crudely, and I shivered at the warmth of his body against mine. I thought he must have been hiding his wings, because I thought, surely I'd just met my guardian angel…
Snapping out of my reverie, I heard the crunch of boots in the snow behind me, and turned. There he was, a smile on his face, still young, still fresh, still beautiful as when I first met him. The chuunin walked to my side, catching my hand in his, just like he'd done back when I myself was a chuunin.
I embraced him then, enjoying his warmth, knowing he was enjoying mine. He stepped back a bit, looking up into my eyes. Then he tilted his head forward, resting it on my chest. I knew it was hard for him. After all, this spot was, for him, of many memories.
"Thank you," I heard him mutter, softly. I raised a hand to stroke his hair, and felt his shoulders shake with a slight sob. "Thank you, Kakashi." Through the thin cloth covering my face, a smile tugged. I looked to the tree where I had once laid almost slain.
There, before it, a rock with messily inscribed names. Names, I'd found, later, to be written upon the stone by Iruka himself, names belonging to his makers, his mother and father, who'd died when he was a child. That day, he'd been on his way to visit their grave. That day he saved my life. That day, we became each other's guardian angels.
"Thank you, Kakashi."
Author's Notes It's short, it's sweet, but it's KakaIru, and it's my first Naruto fanfic I'm posting. ^_^; Actually, it was inspired by something I found on the internet a long time ago, with Kakashi sitting in the snow, bleeding, and thinking back on a walk he'd taken with Iruka when they were children. I made it vice-versa, and maybe a little deeper, too. Oh well. Review, please, because I need feedback so I can correct my oopsies.. Flame if you want.. I like flames.. They keep you warm with anger. ^_^
