Dear Petunia,
You'll never guess what that vile James Potter and his awful band of "Marauders" did today. They used a hover charm to get into the girl's dormitory and used a colour bafflement charm to turn all of our faces rainbow coloured. Luckily they missed our room and went into a prefect's room instead. Now thy have a years detention with the evil Defence against the Dark Arts master, Professor Klaus!
How are things at home with Mother and Father? Is that awfully untidy May Jordan still coming up to you, trying to be your friend? I mean really! Someone should tell her to tidy herself up!
I hope you're having a good time at home. Is your relationship with Henry progressing any further? I know you're interested in him.
Well, I'd better get going now, I hope you'll have a great year!

From your loving sister,
Lily.

I attached my letter to one of the school's barn owls. It was a large, soft one, with fluffy brown feathers. It was my favourite. As strange as it sounds, I had built up a special relationship with it. It was the most reliable, and I felt as if it was my own pet. I would often sneak up to give it treats. You should also see something strange about the tone of my letter. Anyone knows that my sister and I don't exactly get along. Well, we don't, but back then we were the best of friends, despite the distance between us, and the fact that I'm a witch and she's a muggle. None of that mattered, then. Much as she pretends otherwise, it was not that which drove a wedge between us. Dear Petunia,
I'm not sure, but I think that the "horrid Potter" might not be so bad.
It seems a little strange, after professing my hatred for him. He seems to have wised up a little bit. Of course, he still hates Severus Snape, but then again, he is hard to like, and I'm not sure, but he may have laid off him a little bit.
I was sorry to hear that things didn't work out between you and Henry. I hope you'll find love with someone better.

With love,
Lily

Yes, it came as a shock to me too. James Potter, the most annoying person in the world, might actually be a nice guy . It was the strangest thing I had ever encountered, and I lived in a place where the paintings could talk! Petunia never liked him, because of my descriptions of his escapades, and most unforgivably of all, his perpetually messy hair. Her distaste in my choice was highlighted in a reply she sent me one time:".your clearly unfortunate error in your choice of friends disappoints me." being an excerpt of this. I couldn't help it though. It was true, I was beginning to accept him as he was, and I couldn't change my feelings. Even I, however, could not predict the shocking change in my feelings towards him.

Dear Petunia,
I told you that my feelings towards James Potter were beginning to change. Well they have. Completely. He's no longer the childlike boy I used to loathe.
He's sweet and sensitive, and I never would have believed it if I hadn't given him a chance. You can't know how happy I am!
I know you won't approve, but I've agreed to go out with him on a date to The Three Broomsticks. I'm so excited, so you must begrudgingly wish me good luck!

Ever lovingly,
Lily

Well. That didn't go down too well. Oh, my parents were overjoyed, of course. Petunia was a different story. She had a natural antipathy towards James, and couldn't understand why I had chosen him. this began to cause an irreparable rift between the two of us. I was sad that a boy had come between us, but I began to love him. I didn't understand why I had to choose between my lover and my sister, but she was the one who had made it so, not me. I tried to bridge the gap between us, but until she could accept my choice, we could not go back to the way it was before.

She never did.
