The sun was setting on Koholient Island. It was one of the most beautiful sunsets Koholient had ever seen, but Marin didn't seem to notice. The beautiful maiden was standing on Koholient's shore, the wind ruffling her light blue dress. Silent tears were trickling down her cheeks, leaving trails of pure sadness in their wake.
"Why does it have to be this way," Marin whispered. The boy she was talking to only shook his blonde head.
"I'm sorry Marin but…."
"You're leaving me for her!!" Marin snarled. More tears fell down her face. "Go on, go back to your " Princess" Zelda!"
"Marin, listen."
Marin looked up at him. His beautiful sapphire eyes gazed into her own angry brown ones.
"Link, why do you have to leave? If only you knew how much I cared!" Link placed his arms on her shoulders.
"I'm in love with Zelda and…"
"You love her and only LIKE me." Marin sobbed. She looked away. "I love Zelda," Link said. "But that doesn't mean that we still can't be friends… does it?" Marin looked up at him. She couldn't control herself any longer. Link made a startled noise as Marin embraced him. Her grip was like iron. Somehow, Marin isn't the same. The Marin I knew was young and carefree. Link looked down at the sobbing maiden. This one is more grown up, ready to assume her responsibilities……………………
Marin looked up at him. He doesn't understand. He can't see how happy he has made my life. If Link ever left this stupid island…………………. Another wave of tears surfaced, cascading down her cheeks and staining Link's green tunic. If he stayed, I'd love him more than "Look, we don't have to lose contact, we could write letters, or something."
"Or you could stay."
"No." Marin was shocked at his words. "I thought you cared!" Even more tears came to her eyes, clouding her vision. Link sighed. " If you love me like you say you do, than you'd let me go."
Somewhere deep inside Marin's mind, something clicked. He would never be happy with her. His persistent and bold eyes would become orbs of eternal gloom. His clever mind would evolve into a dull witted blob because of the lack of quests and puzzles. If she kept Link, she would destroy him.
Marin let go, surprising Link. She reached up and took her red flower out of her hair.
"Take it, to remember me."
"I thought you wanted me to stay."
"Take it," and she put it behind his long pointy ear. Marin knew that she would never see those ears ever again. "Okay" and their eyes met… for one last time. Link turned around and started to walk back towards his boat. Suddenly, Marin rushed forward and kissed him passionately…..while letting her tongue slip into her tongue slip into his mouth. "I love you," she whispered in his ear. " I guess, in some way… I love you too." They kissed again. This time, it was Link's turn to cry.
Link got into his boat and unfurled the purple sail. An eastern breeze caught it, and began to blow the boat out to sea. Marin watched Link until he was only a tiny speck against blue green waves, a speck that would soon be lost to her forever. " Wait! I love you!" Marin called at last. Only the foaming sea
