A Day in the Life of an Owl
Flying, flying I'm always flying Hedwig thought with a sigh as she flew in an upstairs window of 4 Privet Drive. With a soft hoot she flew to the sleeping boy and landed on him. Food. I am so hungry. He had better have some decent food after what he's been feeding me this some. If I couldn't catch rats I'm sure I would I would fall over from sever malnutrition. Still maybe he doesn't have much. He's kind of on the skinny side for a person. Might not be any food round here. I wonder why he comes here? I'd just stay at Hogwarts or that red headed boy's house. Plenty of good food there. After 5 minutes of Harry failing to wake up Hedwig grew impatient and gave him a sharp peck on the nose.
'Ahh, what?' Harry cried jumping up, 'Oh hey Hedwig, sorry girl I don't have any food.' Typical. Even that Hermione girl had food though not very good. What's with the sugarless snacks? I like sugar. It's not like I'm a diabetic or something. Maybe that's just what she's like. I heard Harry complaining about it, something about her parents being dentists. Whatever they are and why they make her give out bad food I don't know. Still, she's a pretty nice.
'Thanks Hedwig, how did you know to go to Hermione's?' Harry asked while opening the parcel. Well duh. Like I'm going to let you not get anything for your birthday. So predictable. I bet he'll ask me to take a note to his godfather next.
'Wow Hermione, this is great!' Harry said opening a box that contained a number of objects. What is it? Let me see! Let me see! I want to know what it is…what the? Okay I'm not even going to try and guess what that is. Weird humans.
'Hedwig can you please take this to Sirius?' Harry asked tying a letter to Hedwig's leg. How good am I? I knew that was coming. How good am…hang that's not good now I'll have to fly to Sirius'. Damn. Now I've got to fly half way around the world to find his godfather. Stupid man doesn't ever feed me either. Must be like godfather, like godson. They both look half starved and don't feed me…must run in the family.
With a sigh Hedwig flew up only to be slammed into by flying ball of fluff. What the hell? Oh no, please no, not now.
'Pig?' Harry asked grabbing the fluff ball as it flew round and round.
Crazy, idiot birds. It's a disgrace to the name of owl. Hedwig thought before she flew out the window. As she flew across London she couldn't stop her mind from slipping. So peaceful at night. So tempting to stop somewhere and rest. No! I can't do that I've got to keep flying for Harry. He wants the letter delivered. Hang on…quickly Hedwig looked around. She wasn't imagining things. There was something following her. She increased speed but the thing gained on her. Before long she was able to make out that it was an owl. An owl that looked very familiar. Ohhh, Don is looking handsome tonight Hedwig thought as she admired the dark brown owl that she had met a few years ago. They had become very close and Hedwig spent a lot of time with him, often under the pretence of hunting. The fact that his student attended Hogwarts was a source of great pleasure for both of them.
'Hey beautiful,' the dark owl said as he flew next to her.
'Don, I can't talk now, I'm delivering a letter,' Hedwig replied, though she didn't make an attempt to fly away.
'Come down and follow me. I know a great place where we can have a little fun,' he said suggestively with a wink.
'Well okay… just for a little while anyway.' With soft hoots to each other the two owls flew side by side to a secluded tree. Well Harry does think Sirius is a long way away so there's no way he'll notice I take a little longer.
The End
