AN: More sappy fluff from yours truly. I should mention that this is indirectly inspired by a passage from "February", a Dar Williams song, which I saw at the end of "Small Heroes" by Sunfreak. But as I said, this is fluff, whereas the song is angsty, so all I really used was the image of a crocus in the snow. Pairing is ZabuHaku. I don't own them.

Enjoy.

It is an uneventful day in winter, overcast and snowing in large fluffy clusters of flakes.

Any ambient noises are deadened by the snow around the two shinobi, making it seem as though they walk inside a tomb. They move easily, fading in and out of view as quickly as a snowflake discerned from against the sky and lost in the layer that already coats the ground.

The boy walks with his head bowed and senses alert just behind and to the right of his companion, who stalks and fixes the ground ahead of him with a piercing gaze set in a bandaged face. For once neither carries any weapons, visible or otherwise.

They reach a certain point in their journey, and the older of the pair wheels about and begins to head back to their warm shelter, somewhere in the white behind them. The boy breathes the air in deeply one last time and turns to go, but something catches his attention for a half-second more.

"Oh... a crocus..."

He smiles faintly and runs to catch up with his companion, who looks at the boy out of the corners of his eyes but does not comment.

That evening, the boy finds a certain flower on his pillow and seeks out his older partner.

"Thank you."

"Hmph." Affection tinges the interjection.

"It's beautiful."

"So are you."

The crocus lasts until spring.

AN: Review, please? And then go read Sunfreak's stuff. It's good.
