Heroes

What is a hero?

Some people say I'm a hero, but I'm not. Heroes are people who risk what is most precious to them for what they believe in. I don't fit this description of a hero. I risk my life for what I believe in, that is true, but my life isn't precious to me.

Maybe a hero is someone who tries to preserve people's lives at almost any cost. I don't fit this description of a hero either. I have killed millions, many of whom were innocent civilians and children. It was my job to kill, but not civilians or children. It was my mission to protect civilians, but I hurt them, killed them.

Maybe a hero is someone who always gets the bad guys after a long and tiring battle. This description doesn't fit me either. When I fight, I finish it off quickly and the usually kill my opponent. Most of my fights are finished off in less than five minutes.

I gave you three descriptions of a hero, and I don't fit any of them. So, why do people call me a hero? I am not a hero.

What am I if I am not a hero?

I'm not a mercenary, I'm not paid to kill. I just kill. It was my mission to kill, I was trained to kill, but that doesn't excuse me. Nothing can excuse me. I made the choice to become emotionless, to always follow orders, to accept all missions. It was my choices, my choices that killed so many people.

I suppose those of you who don't call me a hero call me a soldier, but I don't think of myself like that. I think of myself as a murderer. If my friend, Duo, is right about everyone having to face God when they die, I am going to have a lot of explaining to do. That is what I am, a murderer.

"Heero, it is nice to see that you like my present to you. I figured that since you wouldn't talk to me about how you feel, I thought that it might be as easier for you to write your feelings down." Said Relena.
