He doesn't mention this to Kirk, whose normal behavior only reinforces the rumors. When Kirk learns of these rumors, he panics.

The Enterprise has been badly damaged, and the crew will have to band together to see her through. As they limp through space, trying to make repairs enough for a hot meal or working warp core, there is strain, and there is determination. The crew will not give up on their ship, and the Enterprise will give all she has in turns, though this does not mean it will be easy.

During the trip, however, they find themselves face to face with a deadly adversary, and Kirk has to deal with several past mistakes.
