In honour of the 'Big Read' (England, December 2003), we asked various wizards and witches of past, present and future what their favourite Muggle book was.

Luna Lovegood kick-started our interview by nominating 'The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy', claiming it had been most helpful.

"You don't find many interesting non-fiction books these days," said Miss Lovegood when asked why she'd choose this particular book, "especially not one so realistic and helpful."

Hermione Granger, after a lot of careful consideration, chose several classics. "It's so hard to choose, because there's so many great books. I haven't read many Muggle books since the summer, so it would be hard to say."

In a different interview, legend James Potter told interviewers "I'm part way through reading 'Lord of the Rings', so, right now, that would be my choice; and the films are great, too." Sirius Black, when asked if he agreed, told our reporter; "No way! Mine would have to be 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' - I kicked serious wand! People will be talking about me for years, now, and that's the kind of book I like; one that stays with you, and has me in it."

It wasn't hard to find that Harry Potter himself strongly disagreed with his godfather on this matter, but declined from telling us his favourite Muggle book (we later discovered a hidden horde of Shakespearian poetry under his bed, thanks to a contact who wishes to stay anonymous).

Gilderoy Lockhart seriously assured us his favourite Muggle book was 'Magical Me', by Gilderoy Lockhart, although our sources convince us this book has never entered a Muggle bookshop. The saleswoman of a large Muggle bookshop seemed to think the book was possibly American, and, if it existed, could probably be ordered - but wouldn't arrive until after Christmas 2010.

We questioned a reading group from Hogwarts (future) about their favourite books, too; a certain young Laura Potter, after a little thought, told us she'd probably pick 'Jane Eyre' - "It's a book with layers." - while her peer, Araine Nikole Barrington-Darcy, chose a book with a title none of our editors knew how to spell (something French, we believe).

"I don't think I've ever read a Muggle book," Mrs Molly Weasley admitted, "But my favourite book. . . well, before the business with Gilderoy Lockhart's confession, I'd have claimed my favourite book to be 'Gilderoy Lockhart's Guide to Household Pests'. A stunning read."

Although not all our interviewee's could pick a Muggle book - or any particular book at all - we found the experiment very revealing, and hope to conduct a Wizards Big Read sometime in the near future.

AUTHOR NOTE

I come in peace!!

This article is not intended to be offensive!

All references to French book titles, Lord of the Rings seeing-film-before- reading-book-ism, American books and the postal service ('The saleswoman of a large Muggle bookshop seemed to think the book was possibly American, and, if it existed, could probably be ordered - but wouldn't arrive until after Christmas 2010') were all intended as light humour, and I'd hate for it to be seen any other way.

Laura Potter belongs strictly to my dear friend Katie, and I by no means claim to own her. ^^

All other characters, book titles and words-that-can't-be-found-in-the- dictionary belong to their rightful owners and founders, and all that disclaimer junk that I probably needn't add on a FanFiction site.

Thank you, have a nice day.
