The Cause of Insanity
A tribute to December 17, 2003
Screaming they ran,
all over the schools,
scaring teachers and students
and acting like fools.
What possessed these youngsters
To do such a thing?
You may laugh when I tell you
It's all for a ring.
One ring in particular,
To be precise
And the powers it has
Are far from nice.
It wasn't just a piece of jewelry
That made them all act like this.
It was another thing entirely,
Oh, something was amiss!
But could it possibly be more
Than day to day obsessions?
Why were they all gathered here
In such a loony-ish of fashions?
But wait- could it mean-
Could today really be?
The thing they've been dreaming-
Waiting to see?
It might involve a king-
or was it a prince?
These girls are going crazy
Haven't said a sane word since.
Is there any real significance
In the phrase "he is here"?
It simply is another one
Of those inside jokes, I fear.
As I listen to them giggle
And I listen to them screech
Offering their services
Elvish, they say they'll teach.
I begin to wonder
Just how their craze did start
Did it just begin with drawing
Legolas's name next to a heart?
I bring myself back
To the present mystery
What about today
Makes them jump and scream with glee?
Through the excited jibber-jabber
I catch a few words here and there
Is there any particular reason
That on Gandalf's staff they swear?
We all are asking questions
Yet no answers do arise
For we're not brave enough to look
These delinquents in the eyes.
As if our minds were being read
A cry then sounded very near
"No victory through strength of arms!"
loud enough Middle-Earth to hear.
"Tis not for ourselves"
came the shouted reply,
"but to give Frodo a chance!"
and held her sword to the sky.
Then they burst into chorus
And many joyous celebrations
Screaming loudly, screaming clearly
Shouting random incantations.
And as the legend goes
They still scream to this day
For this tale of obsessed lunatics
Is one that will always stay.

Ah, I see you wonder still
What was it they did yell?
These mere children who in tiny
Hobbit holes did dwell?
So I tell you dear friend
While in Elvish they did sing,
They ran around shouting
"THE RETURN OF THE KING!"
