With the household finally settled down after Adam's return from college, a new storm cloud is gathering around Hoss, making him distracted and surly. Prodded by Ben, Adam agrees to spend time with his brother and allow him to talk about what's bothering him, if he wants to. He discovers the cause, but must also make a memory journey back to meeting a kind shopkeeper in Illinois.

Joe had returned from his harrowing experience through the desert. Upon first appearance all seems normal as Joe seems to be wanting to dive right back into life at the ranch. Things are not however as they seem. Out of seven people only three made it back. The law will soon discover that the dead did not die naturally. What secrets are Joe and the others holding on to?

During the intense first day of the Battle of the Wilderness, Adam finds himself staring down his youngest brother, someone he had hoped to heaven he’d never meet on the battlefield. A terrible day only gets worse when Adam realizes he and Joe aren’t wearing matching uniforms. Prequel to my story titled “Allegiance.” A Civil War AU.

This was written for the January Journeys Untold writing prompt on Bonanza Boomers. We are given 2 situations, the beginning & the end & we have to fill in all of the details. This month's situations were: Beginning: Something's missing from Hop Sing's kitchen. Ending: The punishment fits the deed.

1863 has arrived, and the Cartwrights face a hard winter. Their faith in God and each other is tested as both Ben and Josie face life-threatening situations and Adam must trust his instincts - and the local Paiute tribe - to save them. And in the end, they will all have to trust one another to endure a visit from some surprise visitors.

After attending Simon Croft's funeral, Adam and Josie both have big news to share with the family. And as Nevada prepares for statehood, Hoss and Patience's baby arrives, and Ben begins to suffer from empty-nest syndrome. AUTHOR'S NOTE: I've been dying to use "Old Sheba" in this series, but I had to take some liberties to make it work. Please forgive my changes.

After accidently causing the death of his dear friend, Gabe, Ben has fallen into a state of depression. His sons are at a loss, unsure of what to do with such a disconnected father. But Adam knows. As 1861 draws to a close, the Cartwrights enjoy their first Christmas with Josie on the Ponderosa. But 1862 brings a number of challenges, from Adam disappearing in the desert to an influenza epidemic that threatens the entire town.
