Esper Roba and his friend Weevil could believe it; they had been invited to a party. "Naturally it's my amazing charisma and charm." Weevil joked, poking his friend Esper in the ribs. Of course it wasn't, but that didn't matter, they loved parties. Nearby, a girl received a similar invitation.

She wasn't a friend of Esper Roba, he didn't even know her, but she liked him. She was Usa, she had light blue hair, and sparkling green eyes that almost glowed when she thought of him, but she knew she would never muster the courage to ask him, anywhere, she just wished for that courage, and her life would be excellent.

She went to the party, and so did Roba, so did the kid named Yugi Moto, and the boy who had defeated Roba in a duel, the boy who dared to call himself a duelist, Joey Wheeler. He only beat him on luck anyway, not real skill. She was dressed in a dress designed to impress, and it did. It was very revealing, and that was its design. Roba and Weevil managed a suit each somehow, and were enjoying themselves immensely, but Usa wasn't, she sat miserably, staring as Roba flirted with some girl.

And he had no reason to magically fall in love with her, like in some books she had read, or movies she had seen on TV. Of course it was Christmas, and anything could happen at this time of year. Presents were given out, but nothing from Roba, and he wasn't under any mistletoe either, unfortunately.

She was completely miserable, and began to cry, the boy named Yugi asked if she was hurt, she just ran away, onto a balcony. In the crisp December night, she saw a shooting star, and made a wish:

I wish I might have the courage, just to ask him.

She could feel more courage as she dried her tears, and marched back into the building, her heart light, she approached Esper and smiled softly. It could have been some magic, but it appeared her wish just might have come true. Of course it wasn't love at first sight, but they began talking. "Hi," Usa said. "Hello." Roba replied, smiling. "Nice party." "I'll say, excellent stuff." They talked a while longer, and then went home, to Esper's home, and talked a little longer. So as if by some magic, they talked, and a year passed quietly, until there came a time when a dark force was hunting the best duelists. And times would be tested for the two.
