Honorary Dragon

Chapter 1: Good-bye

Tressa cradled the baby in her arms. A single tear trickled down Tressa's face to fall onto the child's hair. Tressa brushed the tear from the baby's soft wisps of reddish blond hair. She sighed.

"So much like my hair," she murmured to the child. A light breeze stirred across the desert they stood on the edge of.

A man draped all in black appeared; he had black hair, and black eyes, currently filled with sorrow. He stepped next to Tressa, reaching out and stroking the child's face. At this, the child's eyes opened.

"Your eyes, love," Tressa said softly to the black haired man. He smiled at her, though his eyes remained sad.

"Gainel, she'll be okay, won't she?" Tressa asked. The black haired man, Gainel, nodded.

Tressa took Gainel's hand; together they began crossing the desert before them.

Gainel glanced at Tressa, if only there was another way, but no. Tressa was dying and managing the dreams of mortals was enough to handle, Gainel couldn't raise the child. He knew that the dragons may dislike humans, or even hate them, but dragons didn't hurt the innocent. They would take her in. She was just ten months old, and would be alone with no protection. They had to take her in. They just had to.

They stayed safe all the way to the edge of the desert. Tressa began to cry openly, her tears didn't fall, though. They evaporated off her face, leaving salty trails down her cheeks. Gainel cradled Tressa and the child softly. He would have liked to say something to comfort her, anything. But, he couldn't, not only could he think of nothing to say, he also couldn't speak to mortals outside of their dreams. He settled for holding Tressa until the tears stopped.

"Thank you, Gainel. I'm sorry about that. I-it's just, I'll miss her," Tressa whispered. Gainel nodded and stroked her hair. Tressa kissed the child on the forehead, and Gainel repeated the gesture. He reached into his black coat and withdrew a note. Having handed it to Tressa, he stepped back a couple of paces. She read it, the tears returning; she then inserted it into the baby's blanket.

Gainel returned to her side, they approached the barrier of heat that separated the Dragonlands from the rest of the Realms of the Gods. They stood together against the heat. Tears streaming down Tressa's face, Gainel's face blank except for his sorrowful eyes.

They slipped the child trough the barrier.

"Good-bye, Akkara..." Tressa whispered before breaking down into raucous sobs. Gainel wrapped his arms around her, glanced at where the baby had gone through and then disappeared...
