He hadn't said a word to her the entire trip across the Atlantic but his words rang in her ears still. She'd thought there was still a hope, still a chance, though she'd never dared to admit it, afraid she'd be wrong.
And she had been.
"Sydney, I don't love you anymore and I never will."
Sydney closed her eyes for another second, fighting the fresh tears that threatened to fall. Vaughn had told her just before they'd gotten on the plane, saying he just wanted to make everything clear. She'd obediently nodded her head as if in understanding, she wasn't about to break down in front of him.
Every time she thought her life couldn't possibly get any worse, it somehow did.
She excused herself and went into the plane's bathroom, staring at the mirror, her fingers digging into the sink. She stared into her eyes, what had she done to deserve all of this? She wanted to throw something, to break the dammed mirror. Why her?
It wasn't just Vaughn, it was everything, she'd lost her two best friends, her mother, two years of her life, her memory. She couldn't keep going like this, she was beginning not to care about what had happened to her two years ago. Defeat, boiled at her edges, she was ready to give up.
She took a deep breath, then another, willing away the shaking sobs that visited her every night. One day at a time, she reminded herself, one mission at a time.
Vaughn stared out the window of the plane, but the images didn't register in his brain. He couldn't get the picture of Sydney's face when he'd told he didn't love her, out of his mind. That look, all that hurt, no matter how well she tried to hide it, he wouldn't forget.
He'd do anything to take that pain away from her, he'd lie, he'd cheat, he'd kill but the problem was, was that he was the pain. It was there before he'd told her he didn't love her, Jack was right, he had to hurt her to save her.
He wanted nothing but to pull her into his arms, to comfort her, to kiss her. God, he missed her, no matter how hard he tried to forget he still wanted her, he still loved her.
How had everything gotten so screwed up?
