Set after the first movie…

**SLASH!** Legolas/Aragorn, and a bit of Arwen/Aragorn… You'll see! ^. ^

Aragorn glanced over at the blonde elf sitting on the log across from him, noticing the way the fire reflected on his normally ice-blue eyes, making them a dangerous orange. Smiling, he let his gaze wander to the full moon, wondering how long he could go without wearing Arwen's necklace. She had given him her heart, her immortality, just to spend a few meaningless years with him. He had tried to change her mind, tried to convince her that an immortal life would be perfect, but she had been persistent. She had insisted on exchanging her elven life for a mortal one.

Thankfully, Aragorn had agreed to go away on a quest to destroy the One Ring. No one had found it suspicious that he had volunteered to protect the young halfling. No one had worried that Arwen would spend many nights alone in her bed. This had started off as a way to escape Arwen's lust. Now, as he and Legolas sat across from each other in silence, Gimli asleep in his tent, the poor man realized how deep he had dug himself into this sticky situation.

Legolas saw his human companion deep in thought. The elf's life had changed drastically since the moment when he had agreed to protect the hobbit on his journey to Mount Doom. In reality, he had only agreed because of a promise he had made to a friend long ago……

Growing up together, he and Haldir had become close friends. They both made a promise to each other that the first human they fell in love with would receive their elven necklace. When they were sent to Rivendell to train as diplomats, Legolas met Aragorn, a human sent to the elven palace under Gondor's orders. The young blonde learned from a stable boy that their human guest had been courting Arwen. Legolas, hoping to help his new friend, offered him some friendly advice on how to win an elf's heart. Unknowingly, seeing the two interact, Legolas' dark emotions were awakened, creating a shallow wound in their friendship that would deepen with time.

Avoiding Haldir for quite some time, the other elf evaded an interrogation and a reminder of their unending promise. Legolas vowed to give Aragorn his necklace, but then the hobbits arrived in Rivendell. Frodo, the halfling to end all halflings, had entered his life. At Council, Aragorn defended the elven name, never quite meeting Legolas' eyes. When Gandalf had agreed to be the first member of the Fellowship, Aragorn quickly followed. Legolas had no choice but to join them; he had a promise to make good on.

Legolas noticed Arwen's elven necklace first on the mountain. His fellow elf had given the only man he had ever loved her immortality. Legolas was uneasy for a long time, especially in the darkness of the mines, where it had become difficult to control his pent-up desires. But he had managed, and they became close friends.

Now, the elven prince gazed intently into the fire, wondering where Arwen's necklace was, since Aragorn's half-open button-down shirt revealed a bare chest. This twisted game the human was playing tugged at his heart making him want to curl up and die, mourning for his hopeless love. Legolas sighed and stood up.
