Dares

He took a deep breath, filling his small lungs with the sharp cold and puffing his thin chest up. Cheeks pouched, coat buttons tucked firmly in place, arms lifted level with his shoulders (and what with the layers Ms. Munroe had fussed onto him, that was no small feat), Jamie lifted his eyes.

"Why the wait?" Bobby taunted to the side, and the boy winced where he stood on the low wall. "You aren't scared, are you? Whadda you think, Ray?" The self-styled Iceman turned, grinning, to the resident antihero.

Jamie swelled indignantly, his face pulling into an uncharacteristic scowl. "I am not scared," he protested, as Ray persistently ignored Bobby in favor of nothing in particular.

"Then why don't you jump?" asked Bobby, in what Jamie's mother would call a "mister snotty" voice; he had apparently given up on dragging the older teen into goading the twelve-year old and instead focused entirely on Jamie, much to the boy's unhappiness. "Kitty might see you," he added breezily, mockingly drawing an icy heart in the air.

Jamie flushed in immediate response and stuck his lip out in a glare, but hesitated. It was with a reverent, shy smile that he spotted Kitty studiously rolling a snowman's midriff together, and it was with a shout that he steeled his nerves and flung himself off the wall into the snow.

Approximately five Jamies sat up, after a moment of assorted reactions amongst the students, and each one stared, slightly agape and very red-faced, at one another.

"That hurt," said one of the Jamies, surprised.

"You jerk," a second one snapped at Bobby.

"Hi, Kitty," a third said shyly, wobbling to his feet as the girl raised an eyebrow.

"God," she remarked, unsupportively. "Like, that was such a /Kurt/ thing to do."

The third and fourth Jamies both sighed sadly, and their shoulders drooped as the mirrored faces fixed, embarrassed, on the crushed snow. Meanwhile, with all the expected maturity due to his - their - age, the fifth Jamie had joined the second and first in pelting Bobby with snow.

Note: I still do silly stuff like this - just not to impress people. It can be fun, when done right. Whoo!

Disclaimer: Over three years of writing these and I'm exhausted of them. I don't own the characters. We all know this. *sighs*
