............................................................................ .................... Duo sat at the window of the safe house gazing out at the falling snow. It may as well have been raining for he paid no heed to the white fluff on the other side of the dusty darkened glass. It was quiet.
Heero was gone on a mission to the north. Quatre and Trowa were on a colony. Wufie.... well no one knew of his where about. Duo puffed on the glass and watched it fog up distorting the image before him. He was utterly alone.
The air was growing colder as night began to fall and he slid from his resting spot and made his way to the bunk beds on the other side of the room. Plain yet fulfilling their purpose was the blanketing. It irritated him that everything seemed so distant. Nothing personal at all. Duo climbed onto the top bunk and curled into a ball beneath the plain brown blanket and pulled his chestnut braid to his chest. His familiar smirk had diminished.
'Is this what is left for us? We are nothing but tools for the powerful. I feel just like there pawns in a chess game.....'
Duo closed his eyes and pictured his comrades and wondered if he would ever see them again. Everyday is lived not knowing if your life would be taken from them the next. A smirk spread across his face as he thought on that. He ..The god of Death.... Worried of losing his life...or worse what if his friends lost their lives? What if when Heero returned and they went to the colonies only to find them gone. Destroyed? What if Heero never even came back at all?
A cold tear icy against his rosy cheeks slipped down the edge of his face. It frightened him that their lives were so expendable.
Duo then tried to imagine the future. One where they no longer had to kill. No longer had to Destroy. No worries except what kind of meat to have with dinner. He could picture living back on Earth with Heero. Heero fishing. Duo had to chuckle of the image. Could Mr. Perfect Soldier even be domesticated? Relena sure the hell tried but that went up in a puff of smoke. She won't give up though. She was persistent.
Duo fell in to a light sleep with no dreams.
-BANG-
Braid flying Duo had his gun pointed at the figure across the room.
" Hn ."Was the only thing to pass the strangers lips before he collapsed face first on the cold floor.
"Heero?"
Duo sprang from the warmth of the bed to his fallen friend. Acting quickly he removed the jacket and sweater to find two bullet holes in the left shoulder. Searching his partner he found no other wounds that were more than scratches. With so much practice it took no time at all to patch the wounds.
Settling Heero into the bottom bunk, Duo pulled his own blanket down to keep Heero warm. He would heal. Duo knew Heero would be walking again tomorrow that he was sure of it.
It was a never-ending cycle. Fight for peace, get hurt, recover, and fight for peace. If he kept telling himself that he just may be able to believe it.
Duo sat against the wall beside Heero.
"Someday Heero.... We won't have to fight any more..."
Heero made no reply and Duo was just fine with that.... there was no need for one. They already made that promise long long ago.
