We had been through so much...all of us, Frodo, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf...but especially Frodo. The Quest had changed him so much, it hurt. The scar he bore from the Witch King's blade still pained him, he never felt quite right in the Shire anymore...
It wasn't much of a shock when he declared that he was leaving for the Grey Havens with Bilbo. But oh how I would miss him. No longer would I see his beautiful, almost elven features, his cerulean eyes, which when looking into them made me feel like I was adrift in the Great Sea itself. We stood by, watching Bilbo board the ship, Merry and Pippin blinking back tears. Frodo hugged us all quite hard, but for me, he saved a kiss for the top of my head. The last kiss from him I'd ever receive.
"Sam..." he said softly, stroking my cheek. "I'm afraid, dear friend, this is where we part ways...take care of Rosie and the children and Bag End for me, won't you Sam?"
I blinked back tears and nodded, afraid to speak for the quavering of my voice would make it practically impossible to understand me.
"I'll miss you, Sam..." he whispered. "I'll love you always..."
I hugged him harder, my face buried in his shoulder. "Me too, Mr. Frodo, me too."
At last he let me go and turned to leave. I took my place with Merry and Pippin and gave him a final goodbye...
