Why Did You.?

Author's Note: This is set just after Inuyasha learns what really happened between him and Kikyou fifty years ago, and some of his own private musings about some of the stuff they did. It's a one shot, so Enjoy! ^n.n^

"Why did you betray me, Inuyasha?!"

The wayward hanyou winced at the memory of Kikyou, crimson blood dripping down her arm and that pained look on her face that was completely directing all her emotion at him. Clenching his hands together at his sides again, he felt the prickle of his own tangy blood from his claws digging into his skin.

"I didn't betray you, Kikyou! It was Naraku, it wasn't me!" Inuyasha said aloud to himself as though Kikyou would hear and forgive him.

"Inuyasha. I know you're watching. Come out and sit with me a while."

Inuyasha remembered the way she looked that day. So understanding, at peace with part of herself, at peace in his presence. The way the wind swept her hair, the way she gripped her bow as if it were a part of her. the smallest details about her came back to haunt him now.

"Come out, Inuyasha. I can sense you near."

As if playing the memory out, Inuyasha answered. "Why do you keep coming around me? Don't you know I'm dangerous?"

In his mind, he saw Kikyou embrace him, shoving him somewhat voluntarily against a tree. She began kissing him, but he had no objections. His clawed fingers worked to remove her shirt, as her human hands did his. They began to laugh when they couldn't get the two shirts off at the same time. For once, that warmth radiated in her bluish violet eyes.

"But Kikyou. why are you betraying me now? Don't you see that we were set up?" He mumbled.

Then, leaving pretense he jumped into the highest tree he could see, and threw his head back in agony, howling to towards the moon like any great inu-spirit before him.

.and screamed.

"KIKYOU!"

Kagome woke up. Her breathing was fast and ragged, and she was clutching the few collected shards of the Shikon no Tama around her neck. The scream she had heard was echoing around her in pained torrents, the young kitsune near her unaffected.

'Inuyasha,' Kagome thought immediately. 'Why won't you tell me? Tell me your pains.'

But she could hear him close, and knew he was watching her. So she began to say her musings aloud, like he had just done.

"Tell me your pains, Inuyasha. I'll help you mend the gaps in your soul. I'll help you, like I already said I would with the Shikon shards. Please. tell me." Kagome said softly.

Inuyasha sat on his haunches, his breath coming in sharp bursts from his chest. Did Kagome mean all that? Maybe. Maybe not.

Kagome began to speak again. "Why did you help me those times? It would be so much easier not to love you if you just quit helping me!"

Inuyasha snorted. "Why did you free me in the first place? Why did you break the Shikon no Tama? Why did you.?"

But that was the question that no one would ask. That was the question that was going to be left unanswered. That was the final question, after all was said and done. And still, no one would answer it.

"Why did you.?"
