AN: This is really short. I wrote it awhile ago and decided to post it now. It's a Valentine's story, kind of. Heh.

A Hopeful Heart

As usual the crowd applauded with the expected ordinary level of enthusiasm that came at the end of her long tiresome speeches. And she would smile. And gesture thanks. And smile some more until she was safely resting in the back seat of her escort, the pink limo.
"Good speech Ms. Relena?" Pagan asked, glancing back at her through the rear-view mirror. She softly smiled and nodded before resting her head against the side of the door, staring out the window to watch as they drove by trees, people, buildings, and other vehicles.
"A good speech."

When they finally made it to her office, Relena left without waiting for a bodyguard to accompany her into the building. She quietly entered and no one really noticed her. There was scarcely anyone working today, most employees had asked for it off. She approached her secretary and took the paperwork offered to her before turning to the direction of her office. The secretary seemed extremely happy and Relena avoided looking directly at the cause of that happiness: the big beautiful bouquet of red roses sticking out amongst the duller objects on the desk. The secretary hummed while gathering her stuff. It appeared she had only been waiting for the Vice Foreign Minister to return before leaving herself.
Relena sighed and left the secretary in her dream world. After she shut the door to her office, she dropped everything on her desk and plopped down on her couch, laying back and closing her eyes. Peace and quiet. It was Valentine's Day. One of the most dreadful days to be single, besides Christmas... and well, New Years.... And of course, here she was, stuck working with piles and piles of paper to sort through instead of sharing this day with someone special.
She thought of that special person. He didn't know he was her special someone. She had hoped she would at least see him today, but of course there hadn't been a sign of him anywhere near. She stretched out and found a comfortable position on the couch before dozing off. `A short nap is all I need... not a stupid valentine', she thought in denial, before she fell asleep.

The sound of the clock going off in the hall awoke the princess with a start. She yawned and stood up, wondering why it was so dark out when it was only a few minutes since she had come from her speech at one. She trudged over to the lights and flicked them on, the bright light
assaulting her eyes and blinding her for a moment before she could see again. She looked over to the clock resting on her desk. Nine o' clock! She rushed to her desk and began organizing all the papers that needed to be signed, or needed revisions, or needed to be read and responded to.
Her heart stopped when she discovered they were not as she had left them. Each pile was neat and in order, whereas when she came in, she had just carelessly let them fall wherever. She wondered when this happened, her heart hoping she was right in assuming who did it and she
discovered a little card hidden in her chair. Next to it, a single red rose.
Curiosity struck and Relena held her breath as she fumbled with the envelope. The card was plain white. No writing anywhere except on the inside. She smiled as she read the handwriting and then carefully placed it in a special place in her desk. She picked up the red rose and smelled it before closing her eyes and sitting back in her chair. Maybe it wasn't that bad of a day. And with that she returned to the dream world.

`Sweet dreams Relena,
Heero'
