"Ah. I remember a time when all this fighting was not needed. A time before
you or even your parents were born. We lived wonderfully in our big cities
and small towns. We had everything. We were at the top of the world. At
least, our world. Until they came. They came and ruined everything. They
destroyed our cities. They destroyed all technology and evidence of our
advancements. Now we are reduced to mere slaves, and the Aopytes use us to
build their cities and buildings." Darius looked at the old man with a
puzzled look. Was he really that old? The Aopytes attacked earth over 100
years ago.
"Darius. It's time. Do you know the signal?" the general was waiting for
the right time to attack the nearest Aopyte camp. They were to liberate the
camp and order the prisoners to head west through the desert where they
would meet our forces.
"Yes. I'm ready," he replied. Though he wasn't. As he looked around, he saw
hundreds of people, big and small, who knew nothing of their plan to
liberate. All they knew is a patrol was going out that night.
Night fell. "Darius. Are you sure you want to do this?" asked general
Harper.
"Yes. You're paying me aren't you?"
"If you survive." Darius was about to ask what he meant but a siren
sounded. "Well, time to go"
"Yah. Time to go." Darius sighed under his breath.
"You know what the sign is?" questioned Harper.
"Yah. Let's go." And they were off, going separate ways down the sewer
tunnel. The sewer was the only place the Aopytes either didn't know about,
or didn't care about. Either way, it was a safe place for free humans. As
Darius walked, he watched the children getting in bed at the sound of the
siren. 'How amazing,' he thought, 'Even though they live a horrible life,
they are still happy.'
He found what he was looking for. As he climbed up the ladder, his sword
clinked on his belt. He'd have to fix that before he went into the camp.
The Aopytes had excellent hearing.
Up, through the sewer grate, he saw the desert. Although it was nighttime,
the Aopytes had burned holes in the o-zone, causing great heat at night,
and greater heat in the day. Starting to sweat, he headed off across thee
sand dunes. 'This will be my last job,' he thought, 'before we are free and
I can go somewhere else. Or maybe.' He looked around. Under some of the
sand dunes he saw tops of city ruins. 'Maybe I can help build this place
up. For a price.' He smiled. For a price.
At last he saw it. The last sand dune before the camp. He climbed up the
dune until he saw the camp, then lay down. He would see the signal from
here. About a half hour later, he saw a bright flare about 50km past the
camp. Darius picked up his things and started walking again.
The plan was that he would sneak into the camp and assassinate the camp
general. Then, the small army that the human had would charge in and
destroy every Aopyte in the camp. After, liberation. The prisoners would
head west in the desert until they reached Akiuki, probably the only city
not destroyed. There was something over there that the Aopytes couldn't
breath.
"Hahkoig. Hytuidfreef hreteraku loncha!(it's time to eat lunch!)" Darius
slumped into the corner. He absolutely did not want to be seen until the
general was dead. If General Kyukilo was dead, the soldiers would be easier
to fight for they wouldn't have any orders.
There it was. The officer's tent. Slowly, he made his way to the entrance.
Slowly. Always in the shadows.
