Soar

By Marisa

It was late, around three or four 'o clock in the morning. But Yuugi couldn't sleep.

It wasn't just the full moon shining through his curtainless windows and right into his eyes, or the few crickets chirping as loud as they could, signaling their joy that summer had indeed come to Domino City. Yuugi had been suffering from insomnia for many nights now, and already it had been taking a toll on his body. In his grandfather's game shop, he couldn't even count change correctly anymore. No matter how hard he tried, no matter how many sleeping pills he swallowed, followed swiftly by a gulp of water, he could not fall asleep.

He tossed his head restlessly upon his pillow, his golden bangs already drenched in sweat. The heat in the room was almost nauseating. 'Must remind Grandpa to get me a fan…' Yuugi thought absentmindedly, turning his head away from the window as the cloud that had covered the moon passed by, allowing the light to gleam on his bed. 'And blinds…blinds for the window.'

His whole body was beading with sweat, and he gripped his sheets and groaned. If there was indeed a God up in the heavens, far above earth, why wouldn't he answer his constant prayer of allowing him to sleep, at least one night? One night was all he wanted.

Yuugi squeezed his eyes shut, willing them to stay shut and put his mind to rest, but they snapped open again within a few minutes, staring at his desk, where the Puzzle lay, the chain coiled around it. He pushed himself out from under the comforter and padded across the hardwood floor and picked it up before laying down on his bed again. He set the Puzzle by his pillow and gazed at its eloquent design, fingers grazing the Eye of Horus carved onto it. "Let me sleep," he whispered to it. "Just this night…" He closed his eyes again.

A few seconds later, he felt a ghost of a touch on his lips, and his eyes fluttered open again, gazing into the faded orbs of his translucent darker half. "Yami…" he said softly.

'Aibou,' the spirit replied, hand slipping past Yuugi's cheek and ghosting down the side of his body. 'My partner. You will sleep tonight.'

"Promise…?" Yuugi questioned, his lids already feeling heavy.

'I do.' The spirit leaned down to kiss the boy again before fading from view.

Yuugi barely knew; he was already asleep.

End.
