Mushrooms and Pine tree in the deep
Look out, be careful, watch your self,
Swat away the bugs, curse at the roots,
Trip over the stupid pond elf.
Pick up flowers on the way
Stuff them into your top left pocket
Climb up the highest tree you can find
And hide the flowers in the darkest socket.
Close your eyes and listen to the birds
Hum to yourself as you think of childhood
When you came here and did the very same thing
And sat where you sat now and stand where you stood.
Catching the fairies in the palm of your hand
And laughing as they try to bite you
Then let them go, watching them sore
Wishing you could fly that freely too.
But as a child, you could do anything
Now your older and have things to do
Caring if the mail wasn't brought in
or the phone not answered too.
Now there are things to do and people to see
And money doesn't come from your mum,
And your dad isn't there to help you up
If you are pushed down and hurt by some chum
You make decisions and everything is up to you
You have no time for fun and game
So now you turn your back on the forest
Thinking 'how could I be so lame?'
And you return to your work,
Only stopping for a nap,
And ignoring the rain at your window
Or the sound of your friends at the door 'tap tap tap'.
But when you tuck your husband into bed at night
You wish one more time on your star
That you could play child games again
And wish you lived somewhere afar.
And you wish you can jump over the largest rocks
And hind behind the smallest trees
You wish you could dance with the monsters in the fields
And make honey with the bees
But for now, you rest your head on the pillow
Closing your sleep filled eyes
And only wish, because nothing can come true now
Your dreams are departing flies.
And when your child comes home tomorrow,
With fairies a caught in a jar,
Do not tell her to put it back where it came from,
Rather, tell her your wish on that star.
