"Excuse me," Elizabeth mumbled as she manoeuvred her way through the sea of
bodies to her locker.
"Hey, watch it", a medium sized girl with long dark hair snapped, clipping
Elizabeth in the face with the edge of her hair as she turned.
You watch it, Elizabeth said silently to the offenders back.
Why didn't I open my mouth? She scolded herself.
Because I'm just too tired!
Her answer was partly true. Elizabeth was tired, very tired.
She'd been awake tossing and turning for most of the night. Insomnia was a
condition that plagued her all to often.
It was a sneaky little condition too. It left her alone until Elizabeth
almost forgot that she ever had a problem falling asleep- and then it came
back. It would visit her for a night or two. sometimes three- until she
thought she'd go crazy if she didn't get some sleep.
Until she thought she'd never sleep again.
The hours of night that pass before the first light of dawn give you plenty
of time to think if you stay awake through all of them, Elizabeth had
learned. Plenty of time to brood about where you wanted your life to go-and
where it was really going. Elizabeth had done lots of that. The truth was
that being a teenager had not, up to now, turned out exactly as Elizabeth
had planned.
She had always thought that as soon as she turned thirteen her life would
be transformed somehow- take a new sparkle. That sparkle would get stronger
and stronger every year until her life would be filled with a luminous
shimmery light.
It hadn't happened the day she turned thirteen. But that hadn't bothered
her much at the time. She assumed that it would happen soon. But now that
she would be turning seventeen tomorrow, she was beginning to worry about
that sparkle. What was taking it so long? After all, there was a saying-
"Tomorrow never comes." Never mind, she told herself. You just moved here-
you're in a new school. This is the golden opportunity you've been waiting
for- to be the person you've always wanted to be.
But who is that? She wondered.
"Hello there."
The deep masculine voice made Elizabeth snap to attention. She turned and
looked into a pair of incredible deep brown eyes. They almost took her
breath away.
It is Jack Dexter.
Elizabeth had more than noticed Jason's thick, sandy brown hair, lean,
muscular arms and amazing eyes in the short time she'd been at Barron High.
