Frodo and Pippin

***Please note, the fic is movieverse, because I wanted to have Frodo at Pip's coming of age. And if I'm not right about that, then it's an AU. Oh
well. I hate dates.***

Bilbo didn't want Frodo to make the journey to Tookland so soon after his long illness, so when the winter weather had subdued a bit, Paladin, Aggie, and the children visited them.

It was the first time Frodo was to see his new cousin. When Aggie placed the tiny bundle in his arms his pale face burst into a bright smile. Baby Pippin giggled; apple green eyes alight with mirth.

"I'm sorry I couldn't meet you sooner, Pippin. We will be good friends, I'm sure of it."

Pippin blew a tiny bubble in reply, and laughed.

"I'll always be there for you, no matter where I am." Frodo thought.

When Pippin was a little lad, Frodo promised to visit the Smials on his birthday. The young Took waited patiently for the wagon all day. But, the party came and went, and his cousin never arrived.

Aggie came into the lad's room at night to comfort him.

"I'm so sorry Frodo couldn't make it, love. I know he didn't forget, and I can't imagine why he was delayed." Pippin just smiled.

"Oh, Frodo would never forget," he said matter-of-factly. Before kissing his mother goodnight.

The next day, a package arrived. Pippin opened it eagerly. Inside was a note from Frodo. It simply said, "Sorry I couldn't make it to your party, Pip. I was ill. Got this for you, hope you like it. Love---Frodo" Inside the box was a gray knit scarf interlaced with amber and purple thread. Pippin put it on, and went to find his mother.

"Who's that from?" She asked curiously.

"Frodo," Pippin said simply, smiling. "He never forgets."

"Frodo!" A tween-aged Pippin called, running into Bag End. Frodo looked up from his writing at the table with concern. Pippin's hand was cut and bleeding, and he looked close to tears.

"What happened?" Frodo gasped, quickly rushing Pippin along to get the wound washed and wrapped.

"Merry told me hold his fishing pole for him, but he handed it to me backwards and the hook dug into my hand. I think he did it on purpose," Pippin sniffed.

"Oh, Pip," Frodo didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "I'm sure Merry didn't mean for anything to happen." He finished wrapping the wound, and gave his cousin a kiss on the cheek. "Run along, Pip. I'm sure Merry is wondering where you are, anyhow." Pippin smiled, and ran off, waving to Frodo as he disappeared. His cousin sighed, grinning, and went back to his work.

Frodo watched his cousin dance around the circle of hobbits with Diamond, clapping his hands in time with the music and smiling at his cousin. When the dance was over the lad joined Frodo at the table where he sat, drinking ale quietly.

"Aren't you going to come dance, cousin? It's great fun." Frodo shook his head.

"I'm a bit tired, Pippin. I'm sorry. Go on, I think your lass wants another go around the ring with you," Frodo said, smiling slightly.

"Frodo, you're no fun at all. I'll just have to make you come, then!" Pippin pulled his surprised cousin by the hand out to the field. Frodo smiled as he entered the circle, soon finding he couldn't help dancing along with the others. Pippin's eyes danced with mirth, and Frodo squeezed his hand.

"Happy coming of age, Pippin-love."

They embraced silently before Frodo boarded the ship, tears running down his cousin's cheeks. Pippin's sobs muffled themselves in Frodo's coat, and the older lad leaned over to whisper in his ear.

"Don't forget, Pip, I'll always be there for you, no matter where I am." Pippin looked into Frodo's eyes, tears streaming down his face, and nodded slightly.

"I know," he said simply. "I know."
