The God Of Death
Chapter 9: Goron Surprise
Fire flickered with life in the Fire Temple. Built in honour of the menacing volcanic core of Death Mountain, the shrine housed spirited flames that never seemed to burn out. All this seemed to have brought back some of Link's memories from the last time he had been here. Ganondorf had imprisoned Gorons in the Fire Temple and offered them as sacrifices to rekindle the fiery wrath of the ancient dragon, Volvagia (a snake-like fire dragon, boss of the Fire Temple) and now it was up to Link to save them all. Shaking his head back to the present, Link sped up a flight of stairs and continued to the door on his left. Entering a lava filled room, Link jumped from island to island until he reached the opposite side to find Darunia. Both were relieved to see that the other was safe.
"Sorry but there is no time to talk. I'll go off to trap Volvagia and Link your in charge of releasing the imprisoned Gorons." Darunia spoke in a hurry as he turned to enter the room holding Volvagia, but this time Link was ready and had grabbed the Goron Leader before he had a chance to go through.
Shaking his head, "No this one's mine, you go free your people and I'll take care of that dragon." Link reassured Darunia by magically pulling out the Megaton Hammer (according to the Gorons ancient lore, the dragon Volvagia once terrorized and gorged on the Gorons, until one fed-up Goron fought back. Armed with a divine hammer that was almost heavy enough to move mountains, the Goron pounded Volvagia until the dragon could eat no more) from behind his shield. The Goron Leader's eyes glared at Link for moments, and Link returned the glare. Both remind still as a rock, until Darunia gave Link a nod of approval.
"Stay alive…" Darunia gave a proud smack to his chest and moved aside for Link. Trotting along while carrying the enormously heavy weapon, Link continued through the door to the room containing his enemy, the dreaded dragon Volvagia. Finding another lava filled room, Link leaped from island to island to the massive, octagonal central platform, occupied by nine lava pits at each corner and one at the centre. Once Link landed on the platform, a burst of lava flew out of the central lava pit, slowly giving away to gravity, the magma plunged to the ground revealing the Subterranean Lava Dragon, Volvagia. Blotting wide, the bizarre eyes of the dragon gazed intently on Link, it gave a piercing look as it recalled the very weapon that had defeated it many ages ago. Mystified by the dragon's stare, Link was unprepared for what was soon to come. In an instant braking the silent moment, Volvagia tear his jaws apart and unleashed a breath of fire directed right at Link. Dropping the mighty Megaton Hammer, Link pulled out his Hylian Shield, but that alone did not offer Link much protection against the scorching breath of fire save for the Goron Tunic which lessened the heat level, enabling Link to survive the furious blast. Although Link had reframed from harm, it was at a great cost, one maybe too great of a cost for the high pressure of the blast had thrust the Megaton Hammer of the edge of the platform and down into the molten rock. Link could only watch as the Megaton Hammer was swooped off the platform and driven into the molten rock, and as he watched, he knew that his only hope of defeating Volvagia was sinking. Turning his attention back to his opponent, Volvagia, Link knew he had to stall the dragon until he could think of another way to gain victory. The showdown between Link and Volvagia took place on a slab of land floating in a pool of lava, punctured with several holes. All Link could do was dodge the searing blasts from the dragon, Link had tried all the weapons in his arsenal but none of them seemed to affect the immense dragon. Both the Hookshot and the arrows of the Fairy Bow seem to bounce off the slithering body as if it were steel. Even Fire (enchanted blazing fire arrows), Ice (rewarded for reach the centre of the Gerudo Training Ground, this wintry weapon cuts a frosty arc through the air, freezing whatever received its frigid point) and Light Arrows (a golden gift from Zelda, an arrow enchanted with holy light) had no affect on Volvagia. Only one weapon in Link's arsenal could have damaged Volvagia, that weapon was the legendary blade, the Master Sword, but with the intense speed of Volvagia, Link could never find a moment to strike. The battle between the two was extensive, and during that time Link had to look out for numerous hazards, such as erupting lava from the pits on the platform, or descending boulders from when Volvagia bashes the ceiling, and of coarse the scorching fire breath of Volvagia's.
Time came when Link grew weaker, and began questioning his own victory, at least until a familiar sound alerted Link. Facing the entrance, Link found the Goron Leader, Darunia coming to aid Link. Darunia's face grew into a distress look, as the Goron Leader swung his head from side to side searching for something. "WHERE'S THE HAMMER LINK?!?!?!" Darunia cried out at the top of his voice but all he received was a shameful look on Link's face.
"I… I… I dropped in the lava…" Link replied back. A more distress look came over Darunia, but that was easily shaken off in a snap, as he dove into the pool of lava. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!" Link's eyes widen, as tears began running down. Moments later, Link noticed Darunia climbing back up the platform, and when he reached the top the Goron Leader gave two words and collapsed.
"…Beat…Him…" Link notice that the Goron Leader had with him the MEGATON HAMMER! Relieving the Goron Leader of the heavy weapon, Link turned to Volvagia not knowing if his friend was alive or not, but knowing that he had to finish this, Link darted towards Volvagia and after stunning him with the Megaton Hammer, Link drew his blade and gave the dragon no mercy as he swung and sledged until the dragon slither and writhed into the air. From above, Volvagia unleashed a roar so shrill it caused rocks to fall from the ceiling, and Volvagia plummeted to the lava like stone and burned away. A blue light shone, as Link hasten to it, and once again found himself in the Chamber Of War.
Knocking Link off his feet was a heavy blow from the darkness, and as the figure walked into vision, Link gasped at the GORON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
