Due to La Pamplemousse's opinion, I'm changing this, slightly. I have to
please Cosette fans, y'know.
Title comes from lyrics where Valjean say, "shall live in my protection."
In Monsieur's Protection
Disclaimer: I do not own anything in here, all Victor Hugo's.
"You lazy-good-for-nothing! Get back to work!" I yelped as Madame gave me a swift kick in the shin. I fumbled for my broom. "Now!" Madame shrieked. I didn't speak, that would be worse for me. I started sweeping the floor, momentarily looking up to see Eponine and Azelma, playing with their beautiful dolls. I bit my lip. I wish I had such things.
I heard laughter, people were trickling into the inn. I sighed with relief, I could sit under the table, and maybe Eponine would be nice like yesterday and give me something. Madame trotted out of the room to get food, and I scrambled under the table. Azelma kicked me deliberately, again, and again. I scooted farther away from her. Suddenly Eponine slithered off of her chair and onto the floor.
"Hi." She said shyly. I glared at her, the little pampered brat. She held out her hand, and there was an entire piece of bread and a slice of ham.
"My God, Eponine," I hissed, "what are you doing?"
"Take it!" Eponine thrust it into my hand and popped back up on her chair before I could object. I looked at the food. Well, what harm could it do? I gobbled it within ten seconds, taking care to wipe the crumbs off of my face.
"My, my, Eponine, you do eat fast!" Madame's voice made me shudder.
"Yes, ma'am." I heard poor Eponine gulp.
"Would you like more to eat, my precious?"
"No, thank you."
"Mameselle Toad!" Madame screeched. I burst out from under the table, hoping, Please don't let her know, oh, please.
"Go get some water!" I shuddered.
"But it's cold and dark, an-"
"GO!!" she bellowed, her eyes bulging out. I grabbed the bucket and ran out the door.
It was a long walk through the woods to get to the well. I made it there, but the trip back was terrible. The bucket was heavy, I could scarcely carry it. I kept on crying out.
Then a stranger came, and he carried the bucket for me. But when we got nearer to the inn, I asked him if I could carry it, otherwise Madame would beat me.
Later that evening, I learned that the good Monsieur was going to take me away. Away.from pain, and sadness, and hunger.
The next day we left. I didn't miss anything. Eponine waved goodbye, Madame slapped her for it. I waved back with a smile. Madame couldn't hurt me, anyway. I knew was in Monsieur's protection.
THE END!!!!!
Please review! I was in a Cosette mood, which is the first in my life, and shall probably never happen again.
