Sasuke's Apartment
Chicago, IL
The raven-haired man was pacing up and down his apartment as he held a Spalding in hand, he wore a generic 2k brown shirt and blue denim jeans with black shoes to go with the outfit, his hair stayed the way it was as a child, spiky with some side bangs. He was currently in the living room/ kitchen part of his place and he was currently looking at the tv.
It was currently on ESPN who was kind enough to broadcast the draft to him and other people. The draft was wrapping up since this next pick that Adam Silver was casually carrying up to the podium was the last pick of the draft.
Looking at the tv with hope Sasuke held the ball with a lot of grip. "Come on Silver...say my name," Sasuke muttered as the NBA commissioner cleared his throat. "Ladies and Gentlemen, with the 60th Pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs select..."
"Sasuke Uchiha." the man muttered.
"Jeremy Brown, from Oklahoma State University." hearing this Sasuke just felt his world shatter around him as with rage he slammed his basketball to the ground. "WHAT?! WHO THE HELL IS JEREMY BROWN? DAMN IT POP, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?! YOU LEFT ME ON THE BOARD FOR JEREMY BROWN? WHO IN THE HELL IS THAT ANYWAY?" Sasuke ranted as he took a deep breath which made his composure returned.
"Good night everyone and thanks for coming." with that the NBA draft ended Sasuke went to sit on his couch as he looked at the tv. Sighing more the Uchiha just put the ball beside him. Just then his phone rang, and picking it up, he saw it was his older brother Itachi calling.
"Hey, big brother," Sasuke stated. "I saw the draft Sasuke. I'm sorry that you didn't get drafted."
"It's alright...it's not your fault, I guess those dumb scouts can't see talent if it's right in front of them am I right."
"I guess... but Sasuke I know that this isn't the right time but you should think about your future right now. I think you should just return to Chicago State and finish your degree." hearing this Sasuke sighed. "I think your right but let me think about it Itachi, I just need a second to digest what just happened."
"Okay, I understand. Talk to you later." when the call ended Sasuke put the phone down.
Just then Sasuke's agent walked into the apartment, he was a caucasian man wearing a grey suit and a pink undershirt, he was currently looking very nervous as he decided to make his presence known. "There my guy," he said nervously as Sasuke just looked at the man with a death stare. "Your guy? Your guy?!" Sasuke got off the couch and he went to the man who just walked away from the Uchiha in an attempt to flee. "Your guy was told by his agent that he was gonna be a late first-round, maybe a second-round draft pick if he left college! Your guy is supposed to be in New York with his table! Your guy is about to make his dream of making it to the NBA a dream made possible!" Sasuke and his agent were running around the apartment till Sasuke's agent spoke out having enough annoyance for once.
"Sasuke! Chill man! I know this isn't how we wanted it to go down. Believe me. Like I told you, you're my last best hope at the agency. If you wash out, I wash out with you. But I was thinking, maybe this is the best thing that could have happened for you."
"What made you think of that genius?" Sasuke asked sarcastically.
"It's better to go undrafted and have a choice than to be picked by a late stacked playoff team. Where your chances of making are about as high as the chances of me dating a supermodel. Which despite my contagious charm, are pretty freaking slim."
"Connor I don't need to hear about your fantasies of dating supermodels, I got out of college after playing for one year! I need to hear what's your next move, so tell me what I need to hear?" Sasuke told the man who sighed. "This just affects our timing, Sasuke. Okay? you just gotta keep working hard and be ready." Sasuke went to sit down on his couch as his agent continued " Remember you were a star for Chicago State, making them get to the Sweet 16, that's sure going to help you out since overtime injuries and overhyped draft picks will start showing, sooner or later players are going to wash out and the NBA team's front offices will be calling for one person's name and that's you. You hear me?" Sasuke just sighed as he felt a tear forming in his eye, Connor saw this as he sat down on Sasuke's coffee table that was in front of his couch. Looking at the Uchiha the man had a smile.
"No need to cry man, remember Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team and made fools pay for it the rest of his career."
"Well, he got cut from his basketball team because his couch found out he was busy having sex with his daughter," Sasuke informed his agent who was surprised by the new information. "Wait really? Huh, I didn't know. Anyway, the point is that you should use the draft as slight motivation. A chip on your shoulder at the beginning of a long journey and like every journey, this one begins with a single step. So your first step is to keep working hard and getting in NBA caliber shape, before we know it we'll find you a home before you know it." Sasuke stayed quiet for a minute as he thought for a second.
"Alright, Connor I'll give you the benefit of the doubt so make it happen."
6 Months Later
Sasuke had spent over the past months working on his game, at the local courts, playing amongst his peers the Uchiha stayed in shape, over the course of the NBA season Sasuke would go to the Chicago Bulls' games to see what team would need his assistance. He was able to spot a couple teams that would need his assistance and he hoped they would probably be there to give him a tryout.
He was currently in his apartment as his agent was there as well. There was silence in the room as Connor decided to break it. "Okay, Sasuke I know you've been staying in shape, working hard on your game just so you can wait for your shot."
"Yeah, so when is that going to be? I need to get an income by the end of this month or else I'll be getting evicted. You said me not getting drafted was a good thing, so tell me why it was."
"It was a good thing. This is America! The freedom of choice and all that good stuff. Listen I've been on the phone nonstop and since now is the time in the year where teams are allowed to offer ten-day contracts and should I say Sasuke there is some definite interest for someone with your set of skills."
"What does this mean? I get to choose where I want to go?" Sasuke went to sit down on his coach, as his agent sat next to him. "It's not that easy my friend. But there are several teams willing to give you a little tryout to see if it makes sense for them to sign you." Sasuke thought for a second as he spoke.
"First of all Connor, me and you aren't friends your my agent and I'm your client don't you ever forget that and second, where's the list? I'm ready to play."
"Just keep in mind that these teams have varying levels of interest. If you want the ten-day deal you're going to have to work a lot harder to impress some of these teams than others. " Connor stated.
"Man I don't care about that where the list?" Sasuke said in annoyance.
"Okay, okay calm down. Here's the list, let me know where you want to go and I'll make it happen." Connor went to take out a list from his briefcase as he gave it to Sasuke.
The following teams have offered you a tryout
Orlando Magic - Interest: 79%- Minimum Performance Required: C Average- Starting PG: E. Payton Backup: L. Ridnour
Minnesota Timberwolves- Interest: 79%- Minimum Performance Required: C Average- Starting PG: R. Rubio Backup:
Utah Jazz-Interest: 71%-Minimum Performance Required: C Average-Starting PG: T. Burke Backup: D. Exum
Milwaukee Bucks-Interest: 59%-Minimum Performance Required: B-Average- Starting PG: B. Knight Backup:
"This is it? Only four teams?! Not even the Bulls? Well damn, who should I go with?"
"It's all up to you."
"Aight then I think I'll go with the Timberwolves. They need my help that's for sure, with Rubio out on injury it should be easy for me to get a spot in the rotation."
"Okay I'll call the team just stay neer your phone since they might want to send you to Minnesota for the trial." Connor said as he took the list from Sasuke's hands and left the apartment, Sasuke just sighed heavily as he sat down on his couch. 'My entire career just depends on how I perform during the tryout...this is some very high pressure.' Sasuke thought.
Later in the week he was called by the Timberwolves front office, they paid for his ticket and told him to come at the facility by 11:00 AM, he needed to find a motel at the time and he was able to find one that was a block away from the Timberwolves' Practice Facility.
When it was time for the tryout Sasuke walked to the facility where he was met by the Minnesota Timberwolves' HC Rick Adelman. "We saw your workout at the draft combine, we liked what we saw in you and personally I wanted to take you in the second round, but the powers-that-be overrode me. You're playing with the big boys now." Sasuke and the HC were walking at the court and Sasuke looked over to the court to see his competition, the likes of Zach Lavine, Ricky Rubio and more where busy stretching. 'This is going to be easy.' Sasuke thought with confidence.
"You'll be running with the twos against the starters. Do me a favour and sell out every possession. Loose balls, rebounds, hustle plays, running the break. Do everything, just to show the GM he made a mistake not drafting you. It'll make both of us look good. We probably got room for one more player on this squad. Question is, will it be you?"
"Oh that's not a question whatsoever. That's definitely my spot and none of these fools don't know it yet." Sasuke told the HC as he went on the court. He was playing Point Guard in this scimmage and when he went to just greet everyone he waited for the inbound. The scrimmage was only six minutes and in those six minutes he needed to show what he can do.
The Scrimmage:
Sasuke's POV
I received the inbound pass from Number 24 as I went to the other side of the court, scanning the formation I realised they went with a 2-2-1 zone defense, they were protecting the paint since none of these guys I was playing with were that consistant with the three. As I crossed the line I passed over to Corey Brewer who was in the corner, I went to give him a screen which he didn't even use as he got rid of the ball over to Bennett who was at the top of the key.
Just then I realised that Bennett looked familiar and when I put one and two together I felt like laughing since this was the same guy that the Cavs drafted with the first overall pick. It was hilarious that what they got was distinguished goods. Anyway I stood in the top left corner of the paint as my defender was on me, Bennett decided to pass to me and at the time. I didn't have any space for a layup, so I just passed back to Brewer who was outside. He tried for a three but it just bounced off the rim, no surprise there.
Andrew Wiggins got the rebound and he was able to go coast to coast and get an easy floater. Now I brought the ball up the court when I noticed that the time remaining was 5:01 minutes, now I needed to start patting up my stats. I tried to attack the the paint but Zach Lavine was on me. Every time I tried to attack he just wouldn't let me.
"You ain't passing me." he boasted as I had to retreat outside the mid-range area and pass over to Budinger who was in the left corner, the man also tried to drive in but was stopped so he bounce passed to Dieng who easily bounced the ball of the glass so the score could be 2-2. On D we Brewer was able to read a pass as he got a steal when a bounce pass into the paint was attempted by Lavine. Passing to me, I waited for everyone to go up the court. When they all were up, I went to the ft side of the key as I began to size up on Lavine, two under the legs and a double bounce had him break down as I just zoomed past him. I easily made a two-step layup as I just looked at Lavine. "If you wanna talk smack you better make sure you go by what your saying." I told the man who just smirked. "A'ight, just know it won't happen again." the man replied.
Later, Lavine was able to bounce pass into the paint as the Center was able to get an easy stuff. When I had to bring the ball up, Zach was waiting for me behind the key, I faked right and just pushed the ball behind my back as I know bounced with my left to the left of the paint. Zach was stunned a bit and with the momentum by my side I shot for a mid but the ball just hit the rim, at least Dieng was able to get the offensive rebound and capitalize at the opportunity.
On D, Martin tried to bully Brewer into the paint but the man wouldn't let him, so since he made the shot clock get to two seconds he forced a shot and when it hit the rim I just sprinted up the court like how the HC said I should, Brewe got the rebound and when I waved my hand up in the air, the man saw it and he just chest passed to me. Catching the ball I realized it was two against one so I had to find an opening, I was able to euro step past the defense but I didn't have enough confidence on the attempt so I just had to pass to an open teammate that was cutting to the basket. He was able to get me an assist which I gladly took since now I had 2 points and 1 assist, sure it was bad but it was better than nothing.
We now led 8-4 but it didn't last since Lavine was able to score off a pick and roll. When I brought the ball up the court I called for my own pick and roll. Brewer set it very nicely as Lavine was stuck on it, as I went right Brewer went left and his matchup followed him which left me with a clean look at the rim, I had to add some flair and show the GM I knew how to hype up a crowd. So jumping into the air I did a 360 spin as I jammed the ball into the hoop with one hand!
"OOOH! GOD DAMN!" one of the coaches stated in the sidelines as some of the players just whistled in surprise. I just smirked as I let go of the rim and landed on the floor. "Alright, alright you got some athleticism in you I'll give you that," Lavine said as I smirked. "I got more than that, what you saw was just the beginning." I told the man as I went to the other side of the court with my teammates who were giving me fist bumps due to that dunk.
The score was now 10-6 and only 2:34 minutes remained, so now if I counted correctly I had 4 points and 1 assist, so I just needed to at least get one more bucket and at least a steal. Later the score was now 12-12, the starters were able to come back and now with only 1:05 left on the clock, I brought the ball up the court with a purpose, I needed to score as many points to show I could come out clutch. When Lavine met up with me, I needed to take out the move I've been working on for a while, doing a double move I faked I was going right only for me to just bounce the ball twice as I retreated outside the three point line, I was able to make enough space from that step back and I was rewarded with an easy swish of three pointer. On D the starters were rely trying to score, only 17.6 seconds remained and they were looking to equalize this scrimmage. Lavine was just sitting in the corner of the left side so I had to keep my hand on his hip as I looked at the ball. Martin tried to drive in but Brewer wouldn't let him so he just passed to Wiggins who by surprise got it with only 2 seconds left on the shot clock, so with luck that quick release of his was able to tie the game to 15-15.
So now with no shot clock and only 12.7 seconds left, I had to lead my guys to a win, since I wasn't sure if we got a draw there would be overtime. So running up the court to get enough ground I received the inbound on the run, as I crossed the line. If I scored a game winner I knew that they would have to take me, it would show I was clutch. So as I drove for the paint, I just switched the ball from my right to left as Lavine was on me, he tried to body me down with his body, but our height difference made that a futile attempt, I just did a behind the back from my left hand back to my right as I bounced it back a bit for me to make enough space for me to lean back and shoot over Zach. In the air I saw only 0.8 seconds remained and when my ball bounced high in the front of the rim and it went in. I just held my fist high with a smirk.
"And that's the game! Subs beat the starters with the help of yours truly." I smirked as Lavine approached me. "You really want to take all the credit of that win?"
"Hell yeah I want to take the credit, I needed this win." I replied "A'ight well I hope it helps you, good game." I went to shake his hand as I shook all the starters' hands.

After the entire team practice session was over, Sasuke followed the team to the locker room so that he could get his shower, but he was then called over by his coach. "Hey rookie." the Uchiha turned around to see Rick Adelman. "What coach?"
"Well some of my colleagues thought that might have been a fluke."
"A fluke? Coach, you should tell your colleagues that I said that's how I play in six minutes. There's was no fluke there I should tell you that much."
"Well they said there's no way an undrafted rookie that only played one year of college ball could be that good."
"Really? Huh, so what do you think? I think you could do it every day of the week."
"You sound like a smart man coach, unlike your colleagues,"
"Yeah? Well this smart man has some advice for you."
"What's that?"
"Tell you, agent, to stay by his phone."
"Your gonna sign me?"
"That's right. If there's any way we can get you here, we will. Now go hit the showers" Sasuke just clenched his fist as he retreated to the locker room. After the tryout Sasuke returned back to his motel to find Connor already waiting there with a grin. "What's up with you and that creepy grin of yours?"
"I was just trying that smirk your always doing, should I say it suits you very much,"
"Yeah, well the Uchiha smirk doesn't suit you. Don't try it again." Sasuke told his agent as he closed the door. "So will you tell me why I shouldn't call the front desk to throw you out for breaking and entering?"
"I just wanted to tell you we got our foot in the door." Sasuke looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
"What I mean is that the Timberwolves have offered you a ten-day deal."
"Why not a year?"
"Because you're an undrafted, unproven commodity, you gotta show them you have consistency, Sasuke. Sure what they saw was enough to take a chance on you, so now you have exactly ten days, two hundred and forty freaking hours, to show that you belong. You perform you gotta shot at a guaranteed deal for the rest of the season, you don't, and were back on the streets, I'll be on a job hunt from being let go by Roc Nation Sports and you will be one of those small time Sound Cloud rappers."
"Say what? First of all let this be a warning, no one talks bad about my rap like that do I look like a sound cloud rapper to you?" Sasuke gave him a death stare as he towered over the scrawny man, who just gulped. "No." he uttered "Good, now second how in the hell are you in Roc Nation? Isn't that...what's his name."
"Jay Z?"
"Yeah! Isn't that his thing?"
"It is."
"Well damn, I guess their standards a very low if guys like you can get a job there."
"Hey! What's that suppose to mean?"
"It means what I said, now get outta here, I need to take my gear and go back to the practice facility."
"Why? You just got back from practise?"
"That way when they see that I'm very committed with working on my game it will guarantee that I get a contract."
"Huh, that's a very smart idea. You should go do that, that way you can get yourself I nicer place since I don't want to ruin any more suits sitting on these vermin- infested couches of yours." Connor said as he walked at the door. "hey, this is my house, also Connor do I get paid for this?" the man stopped.
"Yeah, you get paid $25,000 every time you play, sure it's millions of dollars but at least your getting paid for playing only 4 games am I right?"
"Yeah I guess." with that Connor walked out of the apartment leaving Sasuke alone. "Finally, I'm in the league, now I just need to find a way to stay in it." Sasuke muttered as he went to his room to get his gear.
The next day he was in Flip Saunders, the GM of the Timberwolves' office. Connor was with Sasuke as they sat opposite the GM's desk.
"You did well in the workout and in the scrimmage." Flip began as Connor spoke up "He's a baller." he began as he stood up and pointed at Sasuke. "You give him a legit shot and he's going to make the most of it. I mean, when it comes down to crunch time there's no one-" Connor was cut off by Flip who just pointed for him to sit down. Sasuke just shook his head, how did this guy trick him from leaving college.
"Ten days, my man. We'll see if you can swim with the big fish. If you do, you might have a shot to be signed for the rest of the year and if you don't well it's back to the street. You ready?" Flip asked Sasuke who nodded. "Yes, I'm ready, willing and able sir. You'll see." Sasuke replied. "Good, now sign this contract and get outta here, you too." he told Connor as Sasuke signed the contract as he and Connor left the office.
