But A Dream
Chapter 1
"What are reading?" Marissa Cooper asked her boyfriend of over a year, Ryan Atwood, as she sat down at the table where he was involved with pages copied from his English book and a yellow highlighted.
"Something Pond," Ryan said tiredly as he glanced up from the papers, "I'm really not sure because it keeps putting me to sleep,"
" 'On Walden Pond' by Henry David Thoreau," Marissa chimed in and Ryan shot her a look, "What? We read it last week," She took the lid off her school bought salad, "I could tell you what's it about,"
"No, you couldn't. We lose points if we don't have a damned closed reading done," Ryan explained exasperated with his English teacher, Mrs. Mercer for not the first time that year. Marissa took a bite of her salad and made a face.
"What's the matter?" He asked and then attempted and failed at a joke, "I didn't vegetables were that bad,"
"I forgot salad dressing," She said and then took a quick gulp of her diet soda, "I'll be right back," Kissing him quickly on the cheek before heading back to the lunch line.
Ryan smiled and then turned back to his utterly boring English assignment.
