My lover's gone, *I wake and it's strangely cold as I rolled over and opened my bleary eyes.* His boots no longer by my door, *My clothes for the day sat alone on the floor, next to where his should have been.* He left at dawn, *The ship's lights haven't been on long, the others can't be up yet. I sit straight.* And as I slept I felt him go. *Something's happened, something bad. I dress hurriedly.* Returns no more, *It isn't what you fear, it can't be, It is my mantra, climbing the ladder.* I will not watch the ocean, *If it is, I won't stand at the boards and watch, I silently promise.* My lover's gone, *He lays still in the chair, a sliver of red trailing from his lips.* No earthly ships will ever bring him home again. *I tear a cloth to wipe away the blood, it's dry.* Bring him home again, *Why is he in there?* Bring him home again. *Why isn't he out yet?* My lover's gone, *The monitors can't be telling the truth…* I know that kiss will be my last, *I thought I dreamed his kiss this morning. I place my lips to his forehead.* No more his song, *It can't be, it just can't…* The tune upon his lips has passed. *A flatline.* I sing alone, *Tears falling from my cheeks I beg that my ears lie. I wait.* While I watch the ocean, *I watch the green lines falling into blackness. I break my promise* My lover's gone, *There's nothing to be done, he's left me.* No earthly ship will bring him home again. *Numbly I get the heavy blanket we hoped never to use again.* Bring him home again, *Laying it over his still form, I say my good byes.* Bring him home again. *His name will never again pass my lips.*
