Circle of Light

Harry overlooked the lake, dragging his left shoe languidly over the still waters. He tried to remember why he was there in the first place, looking over his somewhat matured reflection in the water, though he could come up with little reason whatsoever. He just needed a change, something to take his mind off of the trivial things in life.

Leaves crunched behind him, and Harry spun around in surprise. A soft female voice was approaching to his left. Ducking into the shadows, Harry observed with an uneasy silence as Luna Lovegood emerged singing from the darkness barefoot, halting at the murky waters with a serene glow to her eyes, and a slight smile tugging at her parted lips.

Her night song continued, its loopy melody made Harry feel as though he were spiraling off some dizzying cliff, and the melody grew higher, gracefully dropping with the rippling of the tide against Luna's feet. The moon was stark overhead as Luna sat down beside the lake, stroking the brittle grass silently. Harry tried not to breathe. It seemed as though she were made for the moonlight, the way she smiled at it. For some unknown reason, Harry suddenly felt more at ease in the shadows, more willing to bask in its temperaments and storms, and for that moment he wanted to join her beside that lake. The song grew ever more powerful, and, entranced, Harry found himself standing on the precipice of darkness and light, the glow of the moon brimming just outside of that small circle of shadow the looming trees provided him.

Luna's song ended quite abruptly. The air made mists of their quick outtakes of breath as both he and Luna moved subconsciously opposite one another. She dipped her toes into the glossy waters where he had stood no more than a few moments ago, and Harry nearly stumbled backwards. What had he been thinking? Quickly stumbling away, and shaking his head, he edged sloppily around dry autumn leaves, and practically flew towards the warm comfort of Hogwarts, his breath harsh, and the ground hard beneath his running feet.

Beside the lake, Luna exhaled slowly, looking over her shoulder at the retreating boy and wrapped her thin cloak around herself tightly.

Luna smiled. The moonlight framed him well.
