I'm adding this because it seems by some reviews I've gotten, that not everyone understands this ficlet. I think some people didn't read carefully enough.
Stacy dies. She was shot in the chest, which I thought was made clear by this line-
"Especially since the bright red stain had soaked through Stacy's once white t-shirt, turning it the exact shade of red that Waif hailed as fall's hottest hue."
Yes, I have a medical background, and it is possible for her not to realize she's been shot, due to shock. She probably was hit in a lung, or near the carotid artery, which would cause massive bleeding and a fairly quick death, but not the instant death of a direct hit to the heart.
As for the point, it was an illustration of the unfairness of life. There are too many real-life examples of an innocent paying the ultimate price for the sins of another.
