I can't believe that my only reviewer thought that I was finished! I
haven't even started! I was just waiting for someone to review. This is
the actual first chapter.
Carol was a good friend of Atrus. Then again, when one person has saved you, your wife, and your friends, it's unlikely for you have a bad relationship with them. But that isn't the only reason they were friends, she had a lovely personality that adapted to whatever situation came along. She could be funny and energetic, or serious. But she was almost always kind and understanding. But she had her flaws. She had a dreadful temper and it took her hours of brooding to calm down. Luckily, she was not often irritated enough for that.
They (Atrus and Catherine) had often wanted to repay her, somehow, but she never asked for anything. She said that the only thing that she wanted was to be able to go home, and that was impossible. She described her world many times. It was a large cluster of islands that she described as being a paradise. She never said much else, though.
Atrus returned from a visit to his latest age to find her sitting in the sun room with Catherine. She had come to see Yeesha.
"Hello my friend," he said when he saw her. "I've just come from an amazing new world similar to your own."
"Oh?" she said with interest as she took a drink of water (she claimed that just looking at Tomahna made her thirsty).
"It's an island called Hawaii."
As Atrus would soon learn, this was not a wise time to say what he did. Carol, out of surprise, sprayed out the entire mouthful of water, right onto him. She clapped her hands over her mouth.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Atrus, but Hawaii!" She became suddenly cheerful and bounced up. "That IS my home! Oh, Atrus, I could kiss you right now!" And she did. Hard. On the lips. She was oblivious to everything in her joy at the moment, so she didn't notice Atrus's flushed face or Catherine's giggles. She eventually asked "Where is it?" clearly meaning the book. Atrus lead her to his study, and pulled the book from somewhere near his desk. Carol linked, shortly followed by Atrus.
