Chapter 5 Verity's Sea Captain
Verity's sea captain arrived the next day as expected. He owned his own boat, but was currently on shore and wished to meet Verity's kinder family.
It was early in the morning, while most everyone was still abed besides Ross and George.
The two men had been having breakfast and hot tea before starting their day. Holding hands and sharing brief tender kisses and loving smiles as the sun came up outside, when they heard the arrival of his carriage.
They walked outside together just as Captain Andrew Blamey stepped down in front of the gate.
"Welcome to Nempara, Captain Blamey," Ross spoke, smiling in greeting. "I am Ross Poldark. This is George. The other guests, including Verity, are still abed, but should be down soon for breakfast. You may, of course, help yourself to anything from our table and fire."
"Thank you, Ross, and George," he spoke while pulling the trunks containing his belongings down from the rack on the back of the carriage. He then paid the driver and sent him on his way. "Please, call me Andrew."
"Of course, Andrew. We are to be family, after all."
George stepped forward to assist the captain with his things, clearly wishing to spare Ross the strain of lifting it after his mate's recent illness.
Andrew and George set his things just inside the door as they all went inside. Andrew served himself a bowl of oatmeal with chunks of apples from over the fire, then sat down across from Ross and George where they had reseated themselves.
Ross carefully poured a cup of hot tea for Verity's fiance, then refreshed his and George's cups before replacing the sky-blue teapot on its simple, matching ceramic trivet.
"I hope your journey was pleasant and not too tiring?" Ross inquired while finishing his own breakfast.
"It was very pleasant, thank you. The sea breeze from your beach was very welcome. It might not seem like much, but when you grow used to something its absence can be jarring. Even when I am not out sailing, I prefer to be near the sea."
"I can definitely understand the draw of the sea," George stated with a smile. "It is where I was born, after all."
"You mean you were born on a ship?" Andrew inquired with obvious curiosity.
"Not precisely. How much do you know about mers, Captain Andrew?"
