Chapter 6: Revelations
Nessie
I felt the world spin around me. I had to hold onto the wall for support. My grandfather gently guided me to the exam table. "I know this is a lot for you to take in,"
"Rape? Are you sure?"
"I'm almost certain of it. You say you don't recall drinking any alcohol yet you blacked out? Are you familiar with the term date rape drug?"
I nodded my head. My adoptive parents had told me all about them. They'd told me that I should never leave my drinks unattended around strangers. But I wasn't surrounded by strangers. I was surrounded by friends. It just didn't make any sense to me.
"Nessie I know this is going to be uncomfortable but with your permission I'd like to perform an extensive pelvic exam to be sure,"
My eyes went wide. "Why? Is that really necessary?"
"If I'm right there could be damage in there that needs to be repaired. I'm very concerned that you haven't been examined yet," and he did sound worried.
"Okay, you can do it grandpa,"
"I'll give you a few minutes to change,"
I blushed bright red when it dawned on me that my grandfather was about to inspect my uterus. I really could die right of embarrassment right now. I supposed it was necessary though. I took off my clothes and put on the gown my grandfather had given me.
Rape. HIV. How the hell could this have happened? I hoped that it wasn't true. God. I was only friends that night. Friends wouldn't do something like that to me.
I jumped a little when I heard my grandfather open the door. "I know this is going to be awkward for you but just think of me as a doctor right now instead of your grandfather," he said.
"Yeah that's a little hard for me to do,"
"Relax. It'll be okay," something about my grandfather's reassuring tone helped me calm down a little.
I laid down on the bed and tried not to think about what was about to happen. "I do have a few questions for you,"
"Of course," I bit my tongue to avoid gasping when he started doing the exam.
"You're human now," he said. It wasn't really a question. It was a statement of fact.
"Yes and I supposed that you'd like to know how, right?"
"I think we're a little curious about that,"
"Maybe a little more than-ouch!"
"I'm sorry Nessie. I'm almost where I need to be,"
"This isn't going to hurt the baby is it?" My baby nudged me gently.
"He will be perfectly fine,"
"How'd you know my baby is a he?"
He smiled at me. "By the scent your hormones are giving off. Most of our kind doesn't notice the subtle differences in a pregnant woman's scent. But I can probably because I've been around pregnant women for centuries. It gets a little interesting when a woman is expecting a girl and a boy. But enough about that. I'd like to know how my granddaughter is human all of a sudden,"
I gulped. "It's these pills I take," I answered as casually as I could.
My grandfather actually stopped what he was doing and looked at me incredulously. "Pills? What pills?"
I took a deep breath. "It's quite a bit of a story,"
"We have plenty of time,"
"It all started back on the day of the Volturi confrontation. I ran for as long as I could before I eventually collapsed of exhaustion. When I woke up I found myself in the hospital here in Houston. That's where Dr. Brown first found me. She used to be a vampire and-"
"Wait," my grandfather stopped me. "What do you mean used to be?" he asked.
"Well I guess you can say she's a bit of a genius scientist. She invented these pills that turn vampires human and half humans like myself fully human,"
The house was suddenly so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. I hadn't really thought much about the repercussions of what this revelation would entail.
"I know it sounds crazy but it's true. The pills work like any other medicine really. Once inside the bloodstream carries it throughout the body infecting everything in it's path. For vampires it's the venom that will redistribute the medicine throughout the body turning you human. At least that is how Dr. Brown explained it. I don't know how she created it as I don't really understand the science behind it,"
Again it was eerily quiet. I wandered what my family was thinking of this new revelation. I was hard pressed to think of any reason any of them would want to become human. Or maybe it was just the possibility of it all.
"Do you have any of these pills with you?" Grandpa asked me after being silent for a minute.
"Yes it's in my bag. Why?"
He shook his head. "I want to meet this woman,"
"I figured you'd probably want to meet her,"
"What I don't understand though is if you've been alive all this time why didn't you come back?"
I groaned and it wasn't because of the discomfort of the examination though it was extremely uncomfortable and awkward.
"I did what I thought was best for everyone. Especially my mom,"
Grandpa looked shocked by my words. "Can you please explain how running away, letting everyone who loves you believe that you died, was better for everyone?"
I gulped. "All my birth did was cause nothing but chaos from the very beginning. I nearly killed my mom when she was pregnant with me. Mom nearly died giving birth to me. Then my very existence caused the Volturi to come after everyone. So I made a decision that was best for everyone. I left. Without me in the picture everyone would live peacefully again,"
I couldn't tell if my grandfather was angry or shocked by what I said. "So you thought that staying away, letting everyone believe that you were dead and causing us immense emotional pain was better?"
"Well yes-I mean I didn't think I'd cause so much pain. I did what was best for everyone,"
"No you did what you thought was best for everyone. There is a huge difference there," he looked upset. "You are your father's daughter alright. He left your mother once thinking it was better for her and now you've done exactly the same thing,"
"I was hoping everyone would just get over my death as quickly as possible,"
"You thought we would just get over your death like nothing ever happened?"
I couldn't speak soI just nodded. "Renesmee Carlie Cullen that is the most absurd thing I have ever heard in my entire life. Do you really have no concept of just how much this family loves you? Did you really not think about the pain we were in because we thought you were dead? Your mother and father thought you had died. Do you have any idea what that did to them?"
I sighed. This wasn't easy at all. Worst of a was that this was just the beginning.
"I don't know what to say," I admitted.
Grandpa didn't say anything for awhile. It wasn't until a few minutes later that he spoke again in a more worried tone. "Are you in any pain at all?"
"No. Why?" I asked him.
"I see signs of a bacterial infection that's been left untreated for months. Looks like another sexually transmitted disease,"
"You mean I don't just have HIV?"
"No and Nessie I unfortunately have some very bad news," he said gravelly. "I'm afraid you were raped. All the signs are here. Brusing, swelling, tearing. The assault was bad enough that your body hasn't fully recovered from the attack even though it was a few months ago," my grandfather had a very worried and sad look on his face.
The room began to spin and I needed to lie down. From somewhere else in the house I heard the sound of something breaking. I jumped.
"It's just your father," grandpa said.
