Next Morning (Song Playing on The Radio: Fast Car by Jonas Blue).
Driving down the freeway after being a day removed from the Fiji mission. It should've been a bog-standard day for the father riding shotgun with his boss and girlfriend. Instead, they were heading out towards a building in the Greed Ring. In the van were Snow and Loona with Blitzo driving. Earlier, Snow had convinced Blitzo to take them down to the adoption centre to allow him to adopt his own hellhound.
Mainly, it was due to the fact Eliza had been asking her dad why she never got a brother or sister when they were alive. The male had had enough of his daughter's questions. So, while she was spending the day with Moxxie and Millie on a job to Earth. Eric had asked Blitzo where it was possible to adopt a Hellhound. So, here they were.
"Why do you want to adopt a hellhound, Snow? You never explained why in your text this morning."
Turning down the radio so he could speak. Eric answers his boss.
"Simple. Eliza wouldn't stop pestering me. Since we got back from Fiji yesterday morning. She was constantly asking why she never had a brother or sister to play with growing up. How was I supposed to explain that her mom was a whore?"
That, Blitzo could agree with.
Orphanage for The Elderly, Disabled and New Born Hellhounds
Shutting off the radio before getting out of the van. The three stand before the building Snow wanted. Loona, however, shivered in horror at the bad memories of this place the three stood outside the doors of.
"Well… this place looks like a shithole. What flea-infested idiot would want to call this place home?"
That earned Snow a kick to his right shin. Rubbing the appendage that had been kicked. He noted Loona looking at him with a glare before she replied.
"I WAS adopted from this shithole."
This made Snow's eyes widen in realisation. Even causing Blitzo to shake his head at Snow's slip-up. But, instead of apologising. He just continued with his speech track in response to Loona's kick to his shin whilst taking her hand.
"Present company not included. My question still stands."
Loona just rolled her eyes. She knew her boyfriend was too stubborn to apologise for his statements. Dropping the subject for now. The three entered Loona's old home before she was adopted by Blitzo.
Inside
Eric didn't know what to make of the place. Was this supposed to be an orphanage or a prison? That was the part he couldn't understand as they approached the front desk. Pressing the bell to get the elderly caretaker's attention. Originally, they got no response from her. That was until Snow cleared his throat to get the elderly dog's attention.
"Hey! Can we get some service here!"
That was Loona that had spoken up to get her old caretaker's attention. Seeing the hound who used to take care of her stood before Loona, Snow and Blitzo. The caretaker's eyes land on Blitzo when she states coldly.
"Sorry. We don't accept returns. Try the local mental hospital instead if this one is giving you trouble."
This was where Snow spoke up.
"Whoa there, lady! We're not returning a Hellhound. We've come to adopt a Hellhound."
The elder dog raised an unamused eyebrow towards Snow. Looking at him, then towards Loona, and back to Snow. She holds the uninterested tone in her voice further.
"Former residents cannot adopt. It is part of our policy the moment they are first adopted. If Loona is wanting to adopt. She must go to the orphanage in the Pride Ring."
Rubbing his left palm down his face to try and stop his irritation from showing through. Blitzo speaks up for his employee before Snow did something that would ruin his daughter's late Christmas present.
"Listen. My daughter is not the one wanting to adopt. It is her boyfriend who wants to adopt. He has a 12-year-old back at home who never got to grow up with a sibling. He's doing this for his daughter."
Almost as if the penny finally dropped. The hound nods with the same neutral expression on her face that irritated Snow to no end. Indicating for the three to walk with the caregiver towards the back where the hounds were kept. If Snow wasn't there to take Loona's hand. She would've had a panic attack at the PTSD-like flashbacks of her old home coming back to her.
Kennels (AKA The Prison Cells).
If Snow felt like being sick. He was certainly close to doing so when he saw the conditions these hounds were living in. It also made him angry whilst watching Loona shrinking at the sight of the cells around her. He knew she was only doing this for Eliza to get a brother or sister. Whilst walking behind Blitzo and the caregiver. Eric hung back to keep a hold of Loona's hand. This causes the hound to freeze up a little until she looked her boyfriend in his eyes. Almost thanking him for keeping her sane while being back here.
Walking by the many cells. Eric's disgust grew by the second at the sights he was seeing. Three hounds were fighting for survival over a slab of meat in the middle of a singular cell. In the next cell, he almost gasped in horror when he saw a blind female hound not having a clue where she was. Loona offered some insight to the hound in question.
"Poor Crystal. Ever since she got into a fight over food when she was six. She was stabbed in both eyes by a bigger hound. Now, when she turns eighteen. She'll be euthanised."
There went Snow's gag reflexes again. This time, he got a good look at the hound named Crystal. After they tried every other cell. But, one by one, none of them pleased the male. That was until one section caught his eye. So, without a second thought, he entered it without his girlfriend or boss knowing where he'd gone.
In the 'To be Put to Sleep' Section.
As Snow looked around the cells in the restricted area. He noticed hounds that were unwanted for so long. They had a mark on their cage that said 'not adoptable'. He passed so many dogs that were either dying, crippled, or had nothing wrong with them. But, they were put here because no one wanted them. This made Snow feel like crying until he saw one hound who noticed him first. She tries to get his attention by calling him.
"Hello, sir? You're not supposed to be in this section!"
The female said softly to the male. Luckily, her soft call to him had caught Snow's attention. Causing the male to walk over to the cell door. Noticing his interest had piqued in the female hellhound. She was quite happy to see him approach as she stood up and placed her hands on the bars themselves. She even blushes when Snow compliments her.
"You're a beautiful one aren't you? Shame that you're not up for adoption."
"You're wasting your time with us pal. Just go back to the main holding cells and pick someone other than me and my sister."
Eric's curiosity was piqued when he spied the charcoal black and grey coloured hound sitting on the bed supported by two chains on the wall. Eric was not a quitter. This was for his daughter. So, he was going to learn all he could about these two. Starting with appearances.
"Can you both come into the light? I need to get a good look at the two of you."
An irritated sigh, followed by the sight of the tall hound walking over to the bars at the front of the holding cell. Once Snow gets a look at the two. His eyes almost bulged out of his head at the sight of the taller of the two hounds. But, his heart broke when he saw the smaller of the two was skin and bones. Noting Snow was looking at his little sister like a patronizing parent in his eyes. He snaps at the male demon.
"DON'T YOU DARE JUDGE HER! The hounds in this place are ruthless. They judged her to the point she almost starved to death."
"What's your story then?"
"I killed the eight hounds that bullied her with my bare hands."
Eric was, honestly, impressed by the tall hound's answer to his question. Deciding he needed to ask further questions. He directs his next question to the taller of the two siblings.
"How old are you two?"
Sensing he wasn't going to get rid of the curious adult in front of their cell. The tall one answers.
"I'm fourteen. My sister is eleven."
This revelation knocked Snow for six. This hound stood, at least, six-foot-one and three-quarters tall. Just two inches and three-quarters smaller in height than Snow's six-foot-three frame. Snapping out of his shock. The tall hound sneers at Snow.
"If you're done interrogating us. As it says on our cell. We're not up for adoption. We're to be euthanised when we turn eighteen. So, scram. You've clearly wasted our time."
The tall teen turned back around after saying this and headed back to the bed against the wall. Leaving his small snow-white coloured sister with a black patch around her right eye stood by the cell door. The straw that broke the camel's back for Snow was watching the small hound whimper at the possibility that Snow wasn't going to save them from euthanasia. Causing his heart to break at the whimper she had let out. Whatever he was feeling towards the two. It helped make his mind up when he says.
"You might want to stand back sweetheart."
Obliging the adult's request. The snow-white hellhound moves back a little to allow the adult at the other side of the gate to do what he planned on doing. The tall hound soon took interest when he saw the adult begin to kick the latch on the cell door. Keeping his cynicism to himself. The two hounds watched on as Snow kept kicking the lock on the door. Though he wanted to tell the adult he was wasting his time. His words stuck in his throat the moment Snow snapped the latch on the cell. Causing the small female to bound and leap at Snow. Though she wasn't vicious, she did attack him with licks to the face making him smile and laugh.
"Okay, Okay. Let me up, girl. Come on."
As he stood up from the female licking his face. the tall hound couldn't believe his eyes at the male standing with his sister in his arms. As she fell asleep comfortably in Snow's embrace. The tall hound now knew what it felt like to have someone care about you. Especially when that demon would burst down a cell door to free the two of you. Holding his free right hand out to the tall hound. The tall hound couldn't help the small smirk when Snow says.
"Come with me if you want a new life."
The tall hound nods. If his sister could be comfortable with this guy. Surely, he could too.
Out of the kennels
Waiting on Snow walking through the doors of the restricted area. Loona and Blitzo couldn't believe what they were seeing. Unfortunately, the caretaker spoke up.
"Sir. Do you know the dogs who are in there are not for adoption? You need to put the two back in their cage."
The caretaker says harshly. But, as she tried to pry the tiny hound from Snow's arms. She growled furiously at someone who had put her through Hell. Making her recoil in surprise and shock until the tall hound stepped in.
"He didn't choose us. We chose him after he won us over. He was the only one to show us he wanted us by busting us out of that prison you call a kennel, ma'am."
The tall hound's statement knocked Loona and Blitzo for six. But, with the sight of the hounds that had picked Snow. Loona got a good look at the female in her boyfriend's arms. And, she soon understood why Snow picked the siblings. He had seen her plight. And, he had picked her, along with her tall brother. Blitzo was horrified by the tiny hound with how she was very skinny, almost skeletal. All because the caregiver, and other inmates, mistreated her before dumping her and her brother in a cell to rot and, eventually, die.
"Sir, I must ask you to reconsider. These two are dangers to society. They're lost causes!"
This causes Blitzo's eyes to widen in fury. There were those words again he'd heard when he'd adopted Loona. This causes him to pipe up for the first time since Snow came out of the restricted section.
"Look. Just change these two's adoption statuses. And, find the adoption papers. I think my employee has made his mind up to adopt these two."
Despite her hesitance. The caretaker nodded in confirmation and defeat. making the small and tall hounds look happily at Snow. Once registration was complete. Eric and Loona finally got a look at Snow's new kids' names.
'Winter' and 'Austin'.
"Eliza is going to love her new siblings."
Eric says happily to the two now standing with Loona and Blitzo. As he signed the documentation and release forms to announce he was their new father. He exited the building with his two new kids beside himself and Loona. But, if the caregiver looked at the forms. And, she read the part where it says the adoptive mother. Eric snuck a certain name on the form to fuck with the caretaker they'd just dealt with.
The names read the following:
Name of Adoptive Father: Eric Kai Snow
Name of Adoptive Mother: Loona.
