The Photograph

Katniss and Peeta have finally met but in a much less-than-ideal circumstance. Peeta remains in a coma. A yo-yo of emotion for Katniss.

29 June

Dear Peeta,

Why did you do it? Sacrificed your life for another. Do you have a habit of jumping in front of random people on the street and taking the hit yourself? I wish you would answer me because I don't know how to process all this. I'm not even supposed to be here in your hospital room, but I am here, drawn back to you. Why, Peeta? It should be easier to stay away, but when I do, my mind wonders about you. Why do you have such an effect on me?

Why were you even there that night? I thought you left the state, and then I would never see you again.

Why do we keep meeting like this? The hospital is such a terrible place to be in, and I have painful memories of sanitized rooms and antiseptic smells from my childhood. But somehow, I have to be here. Maybe to reach you in the dark recesses of your mind. Can you hear my voice? Feel my hand?

The boy, Julian, is recovering in the other room. Only a few bruises and scrapes are on his arms and legs, but otherwise, he is unharmed. He is more in shock than physically hurt. His doctors say he could be discharged in just a few days after a final test.

But you will be here. Alone. Where is your family? Why have they not gone to visit you?

Julian's family thanks you. You saved their precious son, and they are forever grateful. They gave you flowers as a gift. They're from the meadows and are your favorite. Dandelions.
