Chapter 21:

Razzle Dazzle Salazzle

Location: Wela Volcano Park

With the new day dawning, it was time for the gates to open on my third trial. And that's just what happened. The gate was opened, and I walked up to the crater. The crater itself was sealed off from the core of the volcano, but cracks with billowing smoke became a lot more common.

At the top was the next trial captain. He was black and had red shorts, but no shirt. He had orange and black hair, red sandals and a necklace with a red pendant on. Black tattoos covered his shoulders. In his Z Ring was a crystal that was orange.

"Alola…" he said. "This.. is Wela Volcano!" His spirit was explosive. "This is the pride of the Alola region! Do you see it?"

"Erm…" I said. "It sure is a volcano. I mean back in Kanto we have a volcano called Cinnabar that-"

"I wasn't asking about Cinnabar, Ember, Chimney, Stark or Reversal! I'm asking about Wela! Do you not see the spirit of Alola burning within these cracks?"

I shrugged. "I… guess so?"

"Thizz izz one enthuzziazztic guy. Roto," Rotom Dex whispered.

"I mean I'm not saying I don't, but it's more an if you say so kind of situation."

Kiawe closed his eyes. "You lack keen observation skills."

Okay that wasn't true. I have 20/20 vision. "Can we just start this trial?"

"Yes," Kiawe said.

Trial Start!

"I will be testing your skills of observation. Marowak, we need you!" From the entrance to the trail site, three Marowak appeared. However, unlike the Marowak I had been used to seeing, these were black and their bones had blue flames on either end.

It throws bones at Mandibuzz to knock it down. It's thought that Marowak is trying to avenge its parent.

*Cubone that evolve into usual Marowak can evolve at anytime.

"Fazzcinating! Roto! Cubone izz a Ground Type, but Marowak in Alola change Typezz completely! Zzt zzt! Thizz izz fazzcinating!"

"Okay," Kiawe said. "Here is how things are going to work. Marowak are going to dance and do a pose. Then, they are going to dance and and end with one doing a different pose. It is your job to find the difference. You are allowed to take pictures to compare."

"That'zz where I come in! Roto!"

The Marowak started dancing. When they ended, the Marowak on the left had the bone in its right hand, the middle Marowak had the bone in its right and the left had the bone in both hands.

Then they danced again. This time, the Marowak on the right had the bone in both hands, the middle had it in its left and… it was the middle Marowak!

"Very well done," Kiawe said. "Okay Marowak, go get him!"

"Woah, okay!" I said as the Marowak attacked. "Go Misdreavus!" Out came Misdreavus. Upon entering the battlefield, Misdreavus' eyes started to glow. Then, Marowak was surrounded by spooky energy, dealing Super Effective damage to it.

"Zzt! It'zz Hex! Roto! It doezz more damage when the oppozzing Pokémon has a statuzz condition though!"

"Nice!" I told Misdreavus. Marowak came back with Flame Wheel. It spun its bone quickly and hit Misdreavus. "Now Confuse Ray!" Misdreavus sent weird energy towards Marowak. It was confused. Marowak tried another Flame Wheel but hit itself instead. "Now use Hex once more!" Misdreavus stared down Marowak once more, knocking it out.

"Impressive," Kiawe said. "Okay, time for the next dance sequence. Ready?"

The Marowak danced about. This time, the right had the bone in its left hand, the middle had the bone in its left hand, and the left had the bone in both hands.

The sequence started again, and the Marowak were all the same. The big difference is that we got photobombed by… a Hiker?

"Get out of my shot!" I shouted.

"I can't help it!" said the Hiker.

Elliott Vs. Hiker David

"Go Magmar!" David sent out the yellow and orange Pokémon with flames on top of its head and a beak. It had a long tail with an ember on the end.

The hotter the place they better they feel. Magmar in Alola are said to be hardier than those in other areas.

Magby (B) -Lv 30- Magmar

"Makuhita, go!" I shouted. "Use Fake Out!" Makuhita clapped in front of Magmar, causing it to flinch. Didn't matter too much anyway; Magmar was faster.

"Use Fire Spin!" Magmar created a vortex of fire that swirled around Makuhita. I couldn't switch it out now.

"Use Force Palm!" Makuhhita clenched its fist at Magmar. It was a great hit.

"Now use Smokescreen!" Makuhita shot smoke around the area, causing Makuhita's Accuracy to fall.

"Now use Vital Throw!" Makuhita managed to wade through the smoke and toss Magmar onto the ground, knocking it out.

"Sorry, I'll stay out of your trial now."

"Without further ado, it's time for one last test," Kiawe said. "Let's start!"

The Marowak did their pose. The left had its bone in both hands, the middle had the bone in its left hand, the right had it in its right hand and David photobombed once again. "Sorry!" he said.

"Juzzt stay at thizz point. Roto. I guezz you're not harming anyone. Zzt."

Once again, the Marowak did their pose. The last had its bone in both hands, the middle hand the bone in its left hand, the right had it in its right hand, David was being himself and there was also some big, black and slender photobombing it. It had pink patterns all over its body.

"Kiawe," I said. "Is… that the Totem Pokémon?"

Kiawe smiled. "How very observant of you."

For some reason, only females have been found. It creates a reverse harem of male Salandit that it lives with.

Elliott Vs. Totem Salazzle

The Salazzle surrounded itself in energy that raised its Sp. Defense.

"This won't be easy," I said. "Go Trumbeak!" Out came my Flying Type. Salazzle started by firing a ball of fire at Trumbeak which exploded upon impact.

"Zzt! It'zz Flame Burzzt! Roto!"

"Alright Trumbeak, Pluck it!" Trumbeak stabbed Salazzle with its beak. Then, Salazzle started calling for help. Sure enough, a Salandit scuttled in. Salandit used Poison Gas. Trumbeak breathed it in, and it was poisoned. Then, Salazzle use another Flame Burst. It almost knocked out Trumbeak. "Use Pluck on Salandit!" Trumbeak did just that, pecking at Salandit and knocking it out before the poisoned officially took its toll and defeated Trumbeak.

"Keep at it Elliott! Roto!"

"Oh, I plan to," I replied. "Go Torracat!" Out came my partner. Salazzle started with Toxic, badly poisoning Torracat. "We can still do this! Use Bite!" Torracat jumped forward and bit down on Salandit, almost defeating it. Then, Salandit used Venoshock. It's a move that does more damage on a poisoned target, so Torracat was hurt quite a lot. Salazzle then used Flame Burst. It almost finished Torracat. "Use another Bite!" Torracat chomped down on Salandit. It finished it off, but then it fell to the poison.

"Well, that'zz one down! Roto!"

"And I intend for Salazzle to follow suit! Slowpoke, go!" Out came my main weapon for the match. Salazzle started with Toxic, badly poisoning Slowpoke. "Ready?" I put my hands in front as Slowpoke did the same with its tail. "This is a wave so huge it engulfs the volcano! It's time for… Hydro Vortex!" The area filled with water. Salazzle was caught in it as Slowpoke swam towards it. It swam about quickly, creating a whirlpool. Salazzle was bashed and bruised about and almost fell.

"One lazzt push! Roto!"

Salazzle then used Flame Burst, but it wasn't very effective. "Now use Water Gun!" Slowpoke fired water at Salazzle, knocking it out. "We did it!" I went up to Slowpoke and hugged it; it was too dopey to realize that I was doing it.

"Very good," said Kiawe. "It seems you are observant after all. You will need it in battle to pinpoint an opponent's weakness. And now, the great ancestors of Alola bestow upon you… the Firium Z!"

I got… the Firium Z!

"Hey…" I said. "Torracat can use this!"

"And this is how you do it. The move is called Inferno Overdrive." Kiawe put his hands in front, then started making a waving motion upwards with both his hands. Then, he opened his palm, put it forward and using his other hand, put it on his elbow.

"Great!" I said.

"Indeed," Kiawe said. "I also want to present you with an addition to your Ride Pager, if I may borrow it." I gave the Ride Pager to Kiawe, who inserted a chip inside.

"So, what's in there?" I asked.

"Charizard!" Kiawe shouted. "Not a Pokémon found in Alola, but you can use it to use Fly to any part of Alola that you have been to! It saves a lot of walking!"

"I bet it does!" I said. "Let's use it to head back down to Royal Avenue!"

"Great idea! Roto!"

I held up the Ride Pager. "Charizard, take us down to Royal Avenue!" My clothes changed, and then a Charizard came down and took me down the volcano again.

Location: Royal Avenue

"Well, that was handy," I said as I came out of the Pokémon Center. "Let's head to our next trial tomor- oh great."

Near the Thrifty Megamart, I saw a lone Team Skull member graffitiing up the wall with the Team Skull symbol. "The nerve of them! Roto!" Rotom Dex looked at me. "You know, this would be a perfect opportunity to try out your new Z Move!"

I smiled. "Oh yeah." I walked over to the Grunt and tapped on his shoulder.

"What do you want? Keep out of my way!"

Elliott Vs. Team Skull Grunt

"Go Spinarak!" the Grunts shouted.

"A Bug Type! Just the target I need! Go Torracat!" I shouted. "Let's do this!" I put my hands out in front whilst Torracat did the same with its tail. "Burning hotter than the sun in the sky and Wela Volcano on the ground. Prepare for… INFERNO OVERDRIVE!" I made the waving motion with my hand, with Torracat doing the same with its tail. Then, we stuck forward, and the move was set. Torracat opened its mouth and started creating a large fireball. It fired it at Spinarak, which exploded upon impact. Spinarak was seared.

"A Z-move? That's cheating!" The Grunt was frozen. Only for a minute however, because he took off quickly.

"Nice one Torracat!" I said. "We've got a long way to go!"

Rotom's Move Dex!

Zzt! It'zz me again, and we are fresh bag from a trial victory! Roto! And with it being a Fire Type trial, that izz what move we will look at today! Will-O-Wisp!

Will-O-Wisp is one of only two Statuzz Fire Type moves (the other being Sunny Day), and it causess a direct burn on the oppozzing Pokémon. And… that'zz it. However, it can be learned by a lot of Fire Typezz AND Ghost Typezz! Roto! Spooky! Be careful though; it only hazz an accurazzy of 85, so it can be a bit rizzky. Roto!

By levelling up, some Pokémon that learn Will-O-Wisp can include Vulpix, Alolan Marowak and Trevenant!
