It was dark. Darker than a moonless night in the woods as he stood alone and confused. He looked at his hands, trying to see them amidst the dark. He could just barely see the tips of his fingers against a soft golden glow. The man looked up to see a pair of golden eyes piercing through the heavy blanket of darkness and directly through him. Although the eyes themselves weren't significant, the warm light was almost unsettling in a way he could only describe as unnatural.

"Welcome, Mr. Haas. We've been long awaiting your return. Please do take your time to settle back in. We wouldn't want to rush perfection after all." The soft feminine voice cooed. The woman's words were comforting in an odd way. He tried to open his mouth, but nothing came out. "Oh dear, don't worry about answering me. I just wanted to extend a warm hand in greeting before we officially met. You'll have one week to settle in. when the time is right, you'll feel it. Follow that feeling and we shall meet again." She chuckled lightly, but no emotion reached her eyes. "This is farewell for now, Mr. Haas." The eyes shut and darkness swallowed him up once more.

"Hey Grey, we're here. Wake up, sleepy head." An older female said, shaking her sleeping son in the passenger seat of the large moving van. He groaned and sat up straight, stretching the sleep from his body. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and with it the golden memories of dreams.

"I'm up. What'd I miss?" His mouth was dry and voice foreign to his still tired brain. Him and his mother had been driving for hours, switching every few hours to let the other get a nap. As he looked out the window, he saw a sign pass by. 'WELCOME TO GILLETTE' the sign read in large, western font. The four lane road they were on was fairly busy, but there was a significant lack of buildings. A few unmarked warehouse looking buildings, a car wash, a bowling alley and a large bar/coffee shop/gym. Just behind the weird bar was a trailer park sitting atop a stout hill.

Grey's mom turned behind the bar and started up the hill to the trailer park. "We're here! All that driving finally paid off." Grey nodded.

"It looks so small. I thought you said this town was about the same size." Before his mom could reply, they crested the top of the hill, making it to a flat part where the houses sat. The hill kept going up to the left with roads leading up along rows of trailers. To the right was a drop back down the hill into the back of a couple business. Straight ahead he could see for a couple miles where large neighborhoods of hundreds of houses and a few apartment buildings sat, a light stream of traffic flowing along a twisting road off into the distance. Next to the neighborhood closest to them sat an old looking brick building. The large parking lot in front was half full, but he couldn't tell what the building was from this angle.

"The town is big, just spread out. We can get the car off the trailer and take a drive around after we get unpacked, okay? We could even get lunch and do a bit of shopping." His mom smiled, obviously tired, but happy to be home again. They turned up the last road, parking in front of a green house near the top. "Shall we get started?" Grey smiled and nodded.

"I suppose so."

Well. A short first chapter for sure. Most chapters will likely be this length and posted basically at random. My 50 hour work week and social life doesn't let me update regularly, but I'll try to keep it up-to-date. If I disappear for about a month, don't worry. I'll be back eventually with something good.

If you have anything to say, or even characters you might want to see in the story, comment or PM me. I'm open to suggestions and would love feedback on my first story. Thanks!
